Chapter 5 - The Fortress on Lake Michigan

"No," I said, stepping back from the door. "I am not moving into your fortress. I am not trading my quiet life to live as a prisoner inside a Vale stronghold surrounded by armed guards and cutthroats."

"It's not a prison, Maya—it's a fortress, and right now, it is the only place on earth bulletproof enough to keep my children safe," Adrian countered, his voice rising in fierce desperation. He reached out, his fingers wrapping around the metal security chain, and with a sudden, controlled surge of strength, he ripped the chain right out of the wooden doorframe with a sharp crack of splintered oak.

I gasped, stumbling backward as Adrian pushed the door open and stepped fully into my kitchen.

"Have you lost your mind?!" I hissed, glancing nervously toward the hallway leading to the children's bedrooms. "You'll wake the kids!"

"Then let's make this quick," Adrian said, stepping past me and heading straight down the hall.

"Adrian, stop! Don't you dare go into their rooms—"

I scrambled after him, but by the time I reached the doorway of Ethan and Leo's room, Adrian was already standing beside the small toddler bed where Leo was softly snoring, his little red car still clutched in his fist.

The fierce, untouchable Mafia boss stood frozen in the dim blue light of a nightlight, looking down at his son with an expression so nakedly tender and agonizingly protective that it stole the breath right out of my lungs.

"Look at him," Adrian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "He has my hands."

"He's nothing like you," I said fiercely, stepping between him and the bed. "He is kind, and gentle, and he will never hold a gun or order a hit or sit at a syndicate table."

Adrian looked up at me, his gray eyes shining with unshed emotion. "I will make sure of that, Maya. I swear to you on my life—and on theirs—that the bloodline ends with me. No son of mine will ever inherit this empire. But to keep them safe while I dismantle the syndicate from the inside out, they need the ultimate protection only I can provide."

"Dismantle the syndicate?" I repeated skeptically. "You're the head of the Vale family, Adrian. You built your empire on—"

"I inherited a cage," Adrian interrupted quietly. "A cage built by my father and grandfather before them. I spent years thinking I could rule it cleanly. But seeing them today..." He gestured toward the bed. "...seeing what I almost lost, what I didn't even know I had... it changes everything. I am stepping down, Maya. But to do that without getting my children slaughtered by Viktor and the council, I have to take control of the board entirely."

I stared at him, searching his face for any sign of deception, any trace of the cold, calculating manipulation that had defined his family for generations. All I saw was raw, unyielding truth.

"How long will it take?" I asked softly.

"Three months," Adrian replied without hesitation. "Three months inside the estate under absolute lockdown while I systematically dismantle Viktor's faction, purge the loyalists, and transfer the syndicate's legitimate assets into a blind trust. After that... we walk away. Forever. Just you, me, and the kids. Anywhere in the world you want."

The proposition hung in the air, heavy with risk and staggering possibilities.

"Pack the bags, Maya," Adrian said, his hand gently resting on my shoulder for a brief, grounding second. "The armored transport is waiting at the end of the alley. We leave in ten minutes."
