Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation

With the financial freedom provided by the whistleblower settlement, I didn't just sit back and retire; I built.
The first project on my agenda was establishing the Clara Vance Foundation for Financial Transparency and Domestic Survivor Advocacy. For too long, powerful men like Arthur and Julian used wealth, intimidation, and legal loopholes to silence spouses, employees, and whistleblowers. They believed that money could buy impunity and that fear could keep victims trapped in golden cages.
I dedicated a massive portion of the recovered funds to legal defense funds for victims of corporate fraud and domestic abuse, offering them the resources, security, and legal firepower I once had to scrape together entirely on my own.
My lawyers handled the final dissolution of the Vance corporate holdings. The old family conglomerate, once a symbol of ruthless corporate greed, was broken down, liquidated, and its remaining legitimate assets were redirected into public infrastructure funds and employee pension restoration programs—paying back the very workers the Vances had exploited for decades.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, I received a certified letter forwarded from my old post office box. It was handwritten on cheap, lined paper, bearing a postmark from the industrial outskirts of the city.
I opened it carefully. It was from Beatrice.
Clara, the shaky, jagged handwriting read. We have nothing. Julian is facing forty years with no parole. Arthur's health has broken down completely in the infirmary. I am living in a single room with a leaking roof. Please... as a mother, have mercy. Help us.

I stared at the letter for a long moment, feeling not anger, not satisfaction, but a profound, detached pity.
I folded the paper neatly, slipped it back into the envelope, and slid it into the recycling bin. There was no hatred left in my heart for them; they had simply become irrelevant ghosts from a life I had already outgrown. Mercy was something they should have considered the day they watched a pregnant woman get shoved into a glass table and applauded.
