Chapter 4 - The Arrest

Arthur’s face turned a violent, apoplectic purple. He puffed out his chest, stepping forward with all the arrogant entitlement of a man who believed the law was merely a suggestion for the lower classes.

"Do you have any idea who I am?!" Arthur roared, his finger shaking in the agent's face. "I fund half the state senate's reelection campaigns! I will have your badges by sundown! This is an outrage!"

"It’s not an outrage, Arthur," a calm, clear voice cut through his tirade.

The entire room turned.

Two emergency medical technicians, who had followed the tactical team inside, were already kneeling beside me on the floor. They gently helped me prop myself up against the remaining upright section of the gift table. I pressed a steady hand to my belly. Inside, my little girl gave a fierce, powerful kick against my palm. She was a fighter. Unbreakable.

I looked up at the stunned gathering, brushing a speck of frosting from my pale blue dress.

"For fourteen months, Julian," I said, letting the EMT wipe a trace of blood from my chin, "while you were busy playing the big-shot corporate heir and keeping your little mistress in downtown penthouses, I wasn't just sitting at home planning dinner parties."

Julian stared at me, his eyes wide and uncomprehending. "Clara... what are you talking about?"

"I've been copying your father’s offshore ledger keys every single Tuesday night while he slept," I explained calmly, the weight of every hidden file, every illegal shell company, and every laundered dollar resting securely in federal hands. "I recorded the secret board meetings in the home office you thought I never cleaned. Every bribe, every stolen pension fund from your workers, every fraudulent overseas account—I handed the entire archive to federal investigators six months ago."

Beatrice let out a high-pitched, guttural shriek that sounded more animal than human. "You treacherous little viper!" she lunged across the ruined pastry crumbs toward me, her fingernails clawing the air.

She didn't make it two feet.

A federal agent stepped into her path, expertly tackling her to the marble floor and slamming cold steel cuffs onto her wrists. Beatrice shrieked into the rug as her designer pearls scattered across the floor.

Julian backed away from me as if I were a ghost. He spun around, looking desperately toward Chloe for comfort.

Chloe was already scrambling backward toward the open patio doors, her hands raised defensively. "I don't know them! I swear to God, I'm just a guest! I met him at a club three weeks ago! I didn't do anything!"

"Chloe, wait!" Julian pleaded, reaching out a trembling hand.

An agent grabbed Julian firmly by the collar of his expensive Italian suit, ripping the fabric before violently slamming him down onto the very gift table he had just shoved me into. The remaining wooden structure splintered under his weight.

"Oh, and Julian?" I called out sweetly as two agents ratcheted heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists, forcing him onto his knees. "Assaulting an eight-months-pregnant woman in front of fifty high-society witnesses? That's going to add a lovely domestic violence felony to your federal indictment."
