Chapter 2 - The Unraveling

The grand drawing room was packed with the city's elite when I finally made my descent down the sweeping mahogany staircase. Pearls clicked against silk; champagne glasses clinked in rhythmic unison. They were laughing at some private joke when the heavy double doors swung open, cutting through the chatter like a knife.

Julian walked in, but he wasn't alone.

Clinging to his arm was Chloe, a twenty-two-year-old aspiring model with vacant eyes and an expensive, designer sundress that clung tightly to her artificially inflated frame. The room went instantly, suffocatingly quiet. Conversations died on lips. Heads turned from me to the intruder, then back to me, waiting for my reaction.

Julian didn't look ashamed. He looked triumphant.

He marched her straight to the center of the room, standing beneath the crystal chandelier. Arthur and Beatrice smiled warmly, as if a prodigal daughter had returned. Beatrice tapped her crystal flute with a silver spoon, her voice ringing out sharp and clear across the silent ballroom.

"Dearest friends," Beatrice announced, her eyes sweeping over the crowd with manufactured grace. "Julian has made a wise, long-overdue addition to our family. Chloe is carrying the true heir to the Vance legacy. A strong, vibrant boy. It is time we welcomed the future of our dynasty."

A collective murmur rippled through the high-society guests. Some looked away in embarrassment; others smirked, eager for the bloodsport.

That was when I stepped forward from the landing, my voice cutting through the suffocating tension. "Get her out of my home. Now."

Julian sneered, his hand resting possessively on Chloe's waist. "Your home, Clara? Nothing here belongs to you. You're just a vessel we rented to keep up appearances. And now, you're obsolete."

"You invited this... this interloper into our home on the day of my baby shower?" I demanded, anger finally cracking through my controlled facade—though it was only half-real, a performance designed to draw them in.

"She embarrassed me," Julian snapped, his eyes cold.

Before I could reply, Julian stepped forward and shoved me hard. The force caught me entirely off guard. My feet tangled in the delicate hem of my dress, and I crashed violently backward into the gift table. Silver balloons popped with sharp echoes, and the heavy tower of cupcakes spelling WELCOME, LITTLE ONE shattered into crumbs around me.

Pain shot through my lower back and radiated across my stomach. I hit the marble floor hard, the breath completely knocked from my lungs.

"She's carrying the real heir, you barren trash," Julian sneered down at me.

Arthur and Beatrice actually clapped. Two wealthy, heartless monsters applauding an act of domestic violence against an eight-months-pregnant woman.

I lay there on the ruined floor, clutching my belly in agonizing pain, but a slow, chilling smile spread across my face. I glanced at my shattered watch resting on the spilled frosting.

1:59 PM.
