Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Shadows

For a terrifying second, Vanessa stared at Elena, her blue eyes narrowing into slits of pure venom. Then, slowly, a dark, chilling laugh escaped her lips.
"You really are a foolish woman," Vanessa whispered, pushing herself off the doorframe and walking slowly toward Elena like a predator closing in on a cornered deer. "You think you're some kind of hero in a cheap melodrama, don't you? Walking into a house you don't belong in, thinking you can uncover secrets that are far above your pay grade."
"Sebastian trusts you," Elena said, stepping backward until her spine hit the nursery wall. "If I show this bottle to the police—if I have the lab analyze the crystalline residue inside—you're going to prison for attempted murder."
Vanessa stopped just two feet away. She didn't look panicked. In fact, an unsettling calm washed over her features—the calm of someone who held all the cards.
"Go ahead," Vanessa taunt, spreading her hands. "Take the bottle. Run down the stairs, wake up Sebastian, call the police. Do you honestly think anyone in Los Angeles law enforcement is going to take the word of an impoverished East L.A. single mother with a sick kid over the word of Vanessa Caldwell, respected philanthropist and sister-in-law to billionaire Sebastian Whitmore? They'll laugh you out of the station. Or worse—Sebastian's high-priced legal team will sue you into bankruptcy for defamation before sunrise."
Elena gritted her teeth. Vanessa was right about the power imbalance, but she underestimated one crucial thing: Elena had nothing left to lose when it came to protecting innocent children.
"You killed Caroline, didn't you?" Elena demanded, keeping her voice low and sharp. "The crash on the PCH wasn't an accident. You tampered with her brakes."
Vanessa’s expression flickered—a micro-expression of shock that she masked instantly, but Elena caught it.
"Caroline was weak," Vanessa hissed, stepping in closer, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "She was going to divorce Sebastian, take half the empire, and walk away. She didn't deserve any of it. Neither does that brat upstairs. Sebastian belongs at the top, and I am the only one who understands the weight of this empire. And you... you just signed your own death warrant by staying in this house."
Suddenly, heavy footsteps echoed rapidly down the hallway.
"Vanessa? What's going on in here?" Sebastian’s voice boomed from the corridor, filled with sudden alarm.
Vanessa’s demeanor shifted instantly. In a heartbeat, her eyes welled with manufactured tears, her voice trembling with theatrical terror.

"Sebastian! Oh, thank God!" Vanessa cried out, stumbling backward and pointing a trembling finger at Elena. "She's here! The new cook! She broke into the nursery, she was tampering with Diego's formula, and when I caught her, she threatened me!"
Sebastian burst into the room, his eyes wide, looking from a weeping Vanessa to Elena standing by the fridge with the formula bottle in her hand.
