Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Corridor

"...just get rid of the remaining formula from yesterday," Vanessa was murmuring into her phone, her back turned to the nursery entrance. "I don't care how much it cost. If Dr. Keller asks, tell him we followed the exact sterilization protocol."
Elena froze, her boots making no sound against the thick pile of the hallway carpet. She waited a beat, then stepped forward, offering the stack of towels to Sebastian with a steady hand.
Dr. Keller arrived within fifteen minutes, a hurried man with silver hair and a worn leather medical bag. He examined little Diego, who had grown weak, his tiny fists curled tightly against his chest, his breathing shallow.
"His vitals are dangerously low," Dr. Keller announced, checking the infant's eyelids and pressing gently on his distended abdomen. "Sebastian, I told you yesterday. This is acute internal hemorrhaging. We need to hospitalize him immediately for a full gastric workup. I'm talking about a complete toxicology screen, endoscopy, and continuous monitoring."
Sebastian ran a hand through his dark hair, stress etching deep lines around his mouth. "Do it. Whatever it takes. I want him at Cedars-Sinai within the hour."
Vanessa stepped forward, her expression a mask of manufactured distress. "Oh, Sebastian, are you sure? The media circus... if the financial press catches wind that your son is critically ill while you're in the middle of the Vanguard merger, the stock could take a massive hit. Can't Dr. Keller treat him here, under private care?"
Sebastian turned a sharp, bloodshot gaze toward his sister-in-law. "My son is dying, Vanessa. I don't give a damn about the Vanguard merger."
Yet, despite his words, Elena noticed a split second of hesitation in Sebastian's eyes—a fleeting shadow of corporate paranoia that Vanessa effortlessly exploited. It was a subtle manipulation, woven so smoothly into the fabric of the household dynamic that an outsider might have missed it. But Elena, having spent years navigating the high-stress, toxic environments of commercial kitchens and demanding bosses, recognized the signature of a master manipulator.
As the paramedics wheeled little Diego away on a pediatric gurney, followed by a frantic Sebastian, the vast mansion fell into an eerie, suffocating silence.
Only Vanessa and Elena remained in the cavernous hallway.
Vanessa turned slowly, her blue eyes narrowing as they locked onto Elena. The mask of the grieving, helpful aunt dropped instantly, replaced by a cold, calculating chill.
"You're the new cook," Vanessa said, her voice dropping an octave.
"Yes, ma'am. Elena Morales," she replied evenly, refusing to shrink back.

"Well, Elena. In this house, we keep to our designated stations. The kitchen is down the hall and past the pantry. You have no business wandering the upper-level corridors unless specifically summoned. Do I make myself clear?"
"Crystal clear," Elena answered, her mind racing. She had heard the phone call. She knew Vanessa was hiding something about the formula. And as she watched Vanessa turn and glide effortlessly back toward her private suite, Elena made a silent vow: she wasn't just going to cook meals. She was going to keep her eyes wide open.
