Chapter 7 - The Turning Tide

The shockwave rattled the windows of the study, sending a shower of fine dust down from the ceiling. The red emergency lights flickered and died for a terrifying three seconds before kicking back on with a low, droning hum.

"What was that?!" Isabella screamed, panic finally breaking through her cold facade.

"That," Victor said with a grim smile, keeping his pistol locked on his father, "was the sound of your secondary backup squad getting intercepted by the federal strike force I called twenty minutes ago."

Alistair’s hand froze inside his coat pocket. His smug expression evaporated into sheer disbelief. "You called the federal authorities? Are you insane? You'll bring down the entire syndicate!"

"I'd rather see the syndicate burn to ash than let you destroy another innocent generation of this family," Victor retorted coldly. "Now, take your hand out of your pocket very slowly, Father, or the next bullet goes through your knee."

Alistair glared at his son with pure hatred, but the clinical coldness in Victor's eyes told him his son wasn't bluffing. Slowly, the old chemist withdrew his empty hand, stepping back a pace.

Marco didn't hesitate. In a flash of motion, he crossed the room, grabbed Alistair by the lapels of his suit, and slammed him against the mahogany bookshelf. Books tumbled to the floor in a chaotic avalanche.

"The antidote. Now," Marco demanded, pressing the cold barrel of his pistol directly beneath Alistair’s chin.

Alistair wheezed, gasping for breath against the crushing grip, but a defiant smirk still twisted his lips. "You... you can kill me, Marco. But without the master formula in my private vault across town, the antidote you hold is useless. It’s a temporary stabilizer. She will die within forty-eight hours."

Marco’s grip tightened. The rage inside him threatened to consume his reason entirely. But before he could pull the trigger, the heavy study doors swung open wide, and Leo rushed into the room, panting heavily.

"Boss!" Leo yelled over the distant sound of sirens wailing outside the estate gates. "The federal agents have secured the perimeter! But more importantly... Dr. Vance from our private clinic is on the secure line. He analyzed the compound from Sophia's bloodwork!"

Marco turned his head slightly, keeping Alistair pinned. "What did he say?"

"He said it's not a novel compound!" Leo shouted, relief washing over his tense features. "It's a modified derivative of a rare neurotoxin from the 1990s. Dr. Vance didn't invent it—he stole it from an old pharmaceutical patent. The antidote isn't locked in Alistair's vault; it's a standard universal antitoxin used in advanced toxicology labs worldwide! Our clinic has it in stock right now!"

Color completely drained from Alistair’s face. His eyes widened in absolute shock. "No... that's impossible. I modified the molecular chain..."

"You got lazy in your old age, Alistair," Victor said smoothly, lowering his weapon slightly. "You relied on legacy formulas because you thought no one in the modern medical field could keep up with your twisted little mind."

Marco let out a long, shuddering breath. The suffocating weight on his chest lifted just a fraction. He looked down at Alistair, then shoved the old chemist away with disgust, sending him stumbling into the arms of his own remaining mercenaries, who were too terrified to raise their weapons.

"Leo," Marco commanded crisply. "Inform Dr. Vance to administer the universal antitoxin immediately. Spare no expense."

"Already done, Boss," Leo nodded. "Dr. Vance confirmed she's already responding to the treatment. Her fever is breaking. She's going to be fine."

Hearing those words, the iron armor that Marco Benadetti had worn around his heart for fifteen years finally cracked wide open, letting in the warm, healing light of a new dawn.
