Chapter 5 - Siege of the Estate

The mahogany doors of the study shuddered under a heavy, calculated blow. Outside, the sound of booted footsteps echoed through the grand hallways, accompanied by the cold, metallic clatter of automatic rifles being readied. The Benadetti estate—once an impenetrable fortress of silence and safety—was now a war zone.
Marco didn't flinch. He walked over to his mahogany desk, unlocked the hidden compartment beneath the top drawer, and pulled out a heavy-caliber customized pistol and two spare magazines. He checked the chamber with a practiced click, the sound cutting sharply through the tension in the room.
"Leo," Marco said without looking up. "Take the secret tunnel behind the fireplace. Get to the medical clinic. Protect Sophia with your life."
"I'm not leaving you, Boss," Leo replied firmly, unholstering his own weapon and stepping toward the door. "We fight our way out together."
"There is no 'together' if Sophia dies," Marco snapped, his eyes flashing with a fierce paternal protectiveness. "I need someone I trust completely to guard my daughter while I deal with the ghosts of my past. Go! Now!"
Leo hesitated for a fraction of a second, then nodded grimly. He pried open the hidden panel behind the fireplace, slipping into the dark stone corridor just as the study doors burst open with a deafening crash.
Splintered wood flew in all directions. Three heavily armed mercenaries rushed into the room, their tactical gear dark and featureless, weapons raised.
Marco didn't give them a chance to aim. Moving with the lethal speed that had earned him the title of Don, he dropped into a low slide, firing two rapid shots. The lead mercenary dropped instantly, a clean headshot putting him down before he hit the floor.
The remaining two operatives scrambled for cover, returning fire. Bullets chewed through the mahogany desk and shattered the antique lamps, raining glass across the floor. Marco rolled behind a marble pillar, returning fire with clinical precision. Two more muffled thuds echoed in the hallway as his bullets found their mark.
Silence fell over the doorway once more, broken only by the steady dripping of whiskey from the shattered glass on the mantelpiece.
From the smoke-filled hallway, a slow, rhythmic tapping of a cane echoed against the marble floor.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
An old man stepped over the bodies of the fallen mercenaries, his posture upright despite his advanced age. Dr. Alistair Vance wore a tailored charcoal suit, his silver hair neatly combed, and his sharp eyes fixed entirely on Marco. Behind him stood a dozen more heavily armed men, securing the perimeter.
"Magnificent," Alistair said, his voice dry and raspy, carrying an eerie calmness. "Fifteen years, Marco, and you haven't lost your edge. Still the vicious little street dog who thought he could burn down a legacy and walk away."
Marco stepped out from behind the pillar, his pistol leveled squarely at the old chemist's chest. "You should have stayed in the ashes, Alistair."
Alistair chuckled softly, leaning on his cane. "Ashes? My dear boy, I am a scientist. Chemistry teaches us that matter is never truly destroyed; it merely transforms. Just like the vengeance in my family's veins."
Isabella struggled against her plastic ties in the center of the room, crying out, "Uncle! Kill him! Kill him and take everything!"
Alistair glanced at his niece with mild disappointment. "Quiet, Isabella. You played your part, but you were always too impatient. Emotion clouds the formula." He turned his gaze back to Marco. "You want to know why I'm here, Marco? It's not just for the money or the estate. It's about a debt that has remained unpaid for a decade and a half."
"You poisoned my first wife," Marco accused, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. "You murdered Elena."
May you like
"I gave her a peaceful release," Alistair corrected smoothly. "Because Elena was trying to escape us. She realized what my family truly was, and she ran to you for protection. But you couldn't protect her then, just like you couldn't protect your daughter today."
Marco’s vision blurred with red. The temptation to pull the trigger and end the old man's life right then and there was overwhelming. But something stopped him—a subtle movement in the shadows of the hallway behind Alistair.
