Chapter 3 - The Shadow of the Past

The sound of sirens approaching the perimeter of the estate grew faint as Marco’s men locked down the compound. Inside the grand study, the heavy oak doors were bolted shut. Isabella sat chained to a metal chair in the center of the room, her wrists secured with heavy-duty zip ties. She didn't look like a terrified captive; she looked like a general who had successfully triggered a trap.

Marco stood by the grand fireplace, pouring a glass of amber whiskey. His hands were steady, but the muscle in his jaw thinned with suppressed rage.

"Talk," Marco said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "Start talking before I forget that you are a woman."

Isabella laughed, leaning her head back against the chair. "You always were arrogant, Marco. You built this fortress of stone and guards, believing you were untouchable. But you never looked closely enough at the people who served your family. Fifteen years ago, before you were the great Don Benadetti—when you were just an ambitious lieutenant trying to carve out a territory—who do you think gave the rival families the blueprints to your first home?"

Marco turned slowly, his glass halting halfway to his mouth. "What did you say?"

"Elena wasn't killed by the Moretti family," Isabella said, her eyes locking onto his with venomous satisfaction. "They took the blame because it suited your thirst for war. But the poison in her tea? The exact same compound I used on your precious Sophia today? That came from my family."

Marco slammed the glass down on the mantelpiece. The crystal shattered, spraying amber liquid across the stone. He crossed the room in two strides, grabbing Isabella by the collar and jerking her upward.

"You lie!" Marco roared, spittle flying from his lips. "The Moretti family confessed! I watched their boss beg for mercy before I put a bullet in his brain!"

"Of course they confessed under your torture," Isabella hissed, coughing slightly from the grip on her throat. "They didn't even know why you were torturing them! They just wanted the pain to stop. But my family—the Vance lineage—we were the chemists of the underworld long before you ever held a gun. We supplied the poison that killed Elena, and I came back to finish the bloodline."

Marco’s mind raced through a labyrinth of shattered truths. For fifteen years, he had lived with a burning vengeance, executing scores of men for a crime he thought he had avenged. And all along, the architect of his misery had been sitting in the shadows, watching him rise, waiting for the right moment to strike again.

"Why?" Marco whispered, the rage temporarily giving way to a sickening hollow ache in his chest. "Why target Elena? And why wait three years to target Sophia?"

"Elena stood in the way of my father's alliance with the old syndicate," Isabella spat. "And as for Sophia... because breaking a man's heart by killing his wife once wasn't enough. I wanted to see the great Don Benadetti brought to his knees twice. I wanted to watch you realize that the monster destroying your family was sleeping in your bed."

Marco stared down at her, the dark realization dawning on him. Isabella wasn't acting alone. She mentioned her family—the Vance lineage. But the Vance family had been wiped out in a warehouse fire twenty years ago... or so the police reports had stated.

Before Marco could press her further, the heavy oak door banged open.

Leo, Marco’s most trusted enforcer and head of security, rushed into the room, panting heavily. His face was pale, holding a secure tablet in his hand.

"Boss," Leo said, his voice trembling slightly. "Dr. Vance just called from the private clinic. Sophia's toxicology results are back."

Marco dropped Isabella's collar, turning sharply toward his second-in-command. "Is she going to live? What did they find?"

"She's stable, boss. They pumped her stomach in time," Leo reported quickly. "The poison was neutralized. But... Dr. Vance found something else in her bloodwork. Something old. Traces of a chronic, low-dose toxin that has been administered over the last six months."

"I know that," Marco snarled. "Isabella admitted it."

"No, boss, that's not it," Leo swallowed hard, handing the tablet over. "Look at the chemical signature. Dr. Vance ran a historical database match. This isn't just any poison. It's an exact match to the chemical profile found in the autopsy report of your first wife, Elena, fifteen years ago."

Marco froze. The tablet slipped from his fingers, clattering against the hardwood floor.
