Chapter 6 - The Secret Alliance

Through the haze of gunsmoke in the hallway, a shadow detached itself from the wall. Before Alistair’s mercenaries could react, a swift, silent blade flashed in the dim emergency lighting. The lead mercenary standing guard at Alistair's left flank slumped forward without a sound, a dark crimson stain blooming across his tactical vest.
Alistair’s eyes widened slightly as chaos erupted behind him. Shouts of alarm broke out among the remaining guards as they turned their weapons toward the rear corridor.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Alistair snapped, his calm demeanor finally cracking as he spun around.
From the shadows stepped a figure wearing a dark trench coat, a face half-concealed beneath a wide-brimmed hat. Lowering a silenced pistol, the figure stepped into the light, revealing a face Marco hadn't seen in over a decade—a face the underworld had mourned as dead.
"Hello, Uncle," a cool, steady voice echoed through the room.
Isabella’s jaw dropped in absolute horror. "V-Victor? That's impossible! You died in the harbor explosion!"
Marco stared in stunned disbelief. Victor Vance—Alistair’s own estranged son, and Elena’s brother—stepped past the dying mercenaries, his eyes locked onto his father with an expression of cold, unyielding resolve.
"I didn't die, Isabella," Victor said, his voice cutting through the tense air. "I just learned how to swim in the deep end. Something you and my dear father forgot how to do."
Alistair’s face drained of color, his hands gripping his silver cane so tightly his knuckles turned white. "You traitorous rat. I raised you to carry on the family name, and you sided with a street thug?"
"I sided with humanity," Victor replied coldly, keeping his gun trained on his father. "You didn't raise a family, Father. You raised a cult of chemists obsessed with power and vengeance. You killed my sister Elena because she wanted out. And you tried to kill an innocent eight-year-old girl just to satisfy your pathetic ego."
Marco lowered his pistol slightly, his mind struggling to process the twist of events. "Victor... you're Elena's brother? You helped fake her death fifteen years ago?"
"I couldn't save her from him back then, Marco," Victor said, looking over at the Don with a somber expression. "The best I could do was help smuggle her medical files out before the laboratory burned down. I went into hiding, gathering evidence against my own family, waiting for the day Alistair would crawl out of his hole. And today, he walked right into the trap."
Alistair let out a raspy, unhinged laugh. "You think a few mercenaries and a family betrayal can stop what's already in motion? The compound in the girl's system was engineered to bond with her DNA. Even if her stomach was pumped, microscopic traces remain. Without the antidote I carry in this very pocket, she won't live to see sunrise."
Isabella beamed with renewed hope from her chair. "You hear that, Marco? He has the antidote! You have to surrender everything—the estate, the syndicate, your entire empire—if you want your daughter to draw her next breath!"
Marco’s heart hammered against his ribs. Every instinct screamed to protect his daughter at any cost. He looked at Alistair, then down at the old man's coat pocket where a small metallic vial gleamed under the emergency lights.
"Hand over the antidote," Marco said, his voice dropping into a deadly, gravelly register. "Or I swear to God, I will feed you to your own chemistry experiments piece by piece."

Alistair smiled smugly, reaching slowly inside his coat pocket. "Ah, the great Don Benadetti, reduced to begging for his child's life. All you have to do is sign over the entire estate deed, transfer the offshore accounts to my shell company, and—"
Before Alistair could finish his sentence, a deafening explosion rocked the western wing of the mansion.
