Chapter 7 - A New Day at Lake Forest

Three months passed.
The storm that had threatened to consume the Vale family had finally settled. With the evidence provided by Claire’s hidden pouch and Vanessa’s bank records, federal authorities executed a massive sweep across Chicago, completely dismantling the Moretti syndicate. Vanessa Hale was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, while Dominic Moretti and his top lieutenants were incarcerated behind federal bars.
The dark clouds that had hung over the Lake Forest estate for nearly a year began to lift.
AdrianVale had changed. The cold, ruthless man who had ruled his domain through fear and distance began to spend his mornings at the breakfast table with his daughter. He stepped down from the active management of his clandestine operations, transitioning his wealth into legitimate logistics and real estate ventures, honoring a promise he had once made to Claire.
Rachel Carter sat on the stone patio overlooking the blooming rose garden, watching three-year-old Emma and seven-year-old Lily run across the green lawn. Lily was holding Teddy—now fully repaired with neat, expert stitches—laughing as Emma tried to catch up with her tiny legs.
Rachel smiled softly, sipping her tea. She had tried to give her notice a month after the incident, feeling that her presence was a reminder of that terrible day. But Adrian had refused to let her leave.
Instead, he had promoted Rachel to estate manager, giving her full authority over the mansion’s operations and providing her and Emma with a private cottage on the estate grounds.
"They look happy," a quiet voice said from behind her.

Rachel turned to see Adrian walking out onto the patio. He was wearing a simple gray sweater and slacks, looking lighter, younger, and far more at peace than he ever had before.
"They are," Rachel said warmly. "Lily hasn't cried at night in weeks. She talks to Teddy like an old friend now."
