Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Estate

The silence that followed was far more terrifying than the recording itself. Adrian slowly brought his hand down, staring blankly at the silver recorder. Beside him, Lily was weeping, burying her small face into his chest. He wrapped his arm around her, kissing the top of her head, but his eyes were sharp, scanning every corner of the vast living room.

"Marcus," Adrian said softly, his voice dangerously low. "Lock down the estate. Nobody leaves. Nobody uses a phone."

"Right away, boss," Marcus replied instantly, pulling out his radio to alert the perimeter guards stationed around the Lake Forest grounds.

Vanessa Hale stepped forward, her hands trembling as she adjusted her silk blouse. Her face was deathly pale, her eyes darting nervously toward the large grand windows overlooking the rear gardens. "Adrian... this is horrifying. A tragedy... but who could Claire possibly be talking about? We’ve all been here for years. My mother and I..."

"Vanessa," Adrian interrupted without looking at her. "Go check on your mother. Make sure she stays in her quarters until I sort this out."

Vanessa swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. "Yes... yes, of course, Adrian." She turned quickly, her heels clicking loudly against the polished hardwood floor as she hurried down the long corridor toward the staff wing.

Rachel Carter stood frozen near the fireplace, holding little Emma tight. She could feel the storm brewing. Working for a man like Adrian Vale meant understanding the lethal realities of his world, and right now, the air in the room tasted like sulfur before a lightning strike.

"Rachel," Adrian spoke, his tone softening slightly as he turned toward the young housekeeper. "Take Lily upstairs to her room. Stay with her until I come back."

"Yes, Mr. Vale," Rachel whispered nervously. She took Lily’s hand softly. "Come on, sweetie. Let's go upstairs."

As Rachel reached down to pick up Emma, the three-year-old girl pulled on her mother’s collar and pointed her tiny finger down the hallway where Vanessa had just disappeared.

"Mommy," Emma murmured in her innocent, quiet voice. "The pretty lady dropped her shiny key under the bench."
