Chapter 4 - The Housekeeper’s Secret
Adrian stopped in his tracks. He turned around slowly to look at the toddler. "What did you say, Emma?"
Emma looked at the tall man without fear, pointing toward the heavy mahogany bench near the grand staircase. "She dropped a key when the voice talked. She pushed it under the bench with her shoe."
Marcus immediately walked over to the bench, kneeling down to peer into the narrow gap beneath the dark wood. He reached inside and pulled out a small, brass key attached to a numbered metal tag.
"It's a safety deposit key," Marcus said, holding it up to the light. "Bank of Chicago. Registered under a private box."
Adrian’s eyes narrowed into slits. The pieces were beginning to fall into place with brutal clarity. Vanessa had been the one person who had free access to every room in the mansion. She managed the schedules, handled the internal mail, and had intimate knowledge of Claire’s daily routine.
"Marcus," Adrian commanded quietly. "Bring Vanessa and her mother to my study. Now."
Ten minutes later, the heavy doors of Adrian’s private study clicked shut. The room was lined with dark leather books and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty forest. Vanessa stood near the fireplace, her arms crossed tightly, while her mother, Margaret Hale—a tired-looking woman in her late fifties—sat nervously in a leather armchair, clutching her handkerchief.
"Adrian, what is the meaning of this?" Margaret asked, her voice shaking with genuine confusion. "Marcus brought us in here like criminals! We have served your family for twenty years!"
"Not you, Margaret," Adrian said calmly, sitting behind his massive mahogany desk. He placed the silver recorder and the brass key side by side on the polished wood. "Your daughter."

Vanessa’s facade cracked. "Adrian, that key isn't mine! The toddler made a mistake! She’s three years old, for God’s sake!"
"Emma didn't lie," Adrian replied coldly. "She saw you drop it when Claire’s voice came over the speaker. You panicked, Vanessa. You knew what was on that recording."
