Chapter 2 - Whispers from the Grave

The room remained frozen in time as Claire’s recorded voice echoed off the high marble ceilings of the Vale estate. Her tone was gentle, soothing, and laced with the familiar tenderness that Lily had spent nearly a year longing to hear again.

"Lily, my sweet girl, if you are listening to this without me, it means I wasn't able to come home," Claire’s voice trembled slightly through the tiny speaker, though she maintained a steady composure. "I hid this inside Teddy because I knew it was the one thing you would always keep close. But this message isn't just for you. It's for your father."

Adrian felt a cold shudder run down his spine. He looked up slowly, his dark eyes locking onto the small silver device in his hand. The room felt suffocating. Marcus stood by the heavy oak doors, his hand instinctively resting inside his jacket, while Rachel pulled Emma closer to her chest, sensing the dangerous shift in the atmosphere.

"Adrian," Claire’s voice continued, calling out to him across the expanse of death and time. "If you are hearing this, it means my time ran out faster than I thought. Don't trust the reports. Don't trust the narrative they will try to sell you about an accident on the sharp curve by the lake. I didn't lose control of the car. Someone disabled my brakes before I left the estate."

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Lily wept softly into her father’s sleeve, but Adrian did not move a muscle. His jaw tightened until the skin turned pale, a terrifying calm descending over his face. The mafia boss had returned, replaced entirely by a cold, calculating predator.

"I found out something I was never meant to know," Claire said, her breath heavy on the recording. "For months, I noticed discrepancies in the house accounts and confidential family files. Someone inside our home—someone we treated like family—has been leaking your travel routes and secure shipments to the Moretti syndicate. When I confronted them quietly, they realized I had proof."

Adrian’s chest heaved. The Moretti family had been his primary rivals in Chicago for over a decade, but a fragile peace treaty had kept blood off the streets for the past two years. If Claire was right, someone inside his own inner sanctum had orchestrated her murder to protect their own treason.

"I left the original files hidden in the old conservatory behind the rose garden," Claire’s voice began to fade out into heavy static. "Look under the fifth stone step. Be careful, Adrian. They are closer than you think. Tell Lily I love her... always."

The static snapped into dead silence.
