Chapter 8 - The Santos Foundation

One year later, the city hosted the annual gala for the newly established Santos-Moretti Foundation.
The foundation, funded entirely by the liquidated assets of the Chen estate and Dante’s legitimate holdings, was dedicated to providing safe housing, legal protection, and comprehensive healthcare for young single mothers and victims of domestic abuse.
The grand ballroom of the city’s finest hotel was decorated in ivory and silver. Hundreds of guests—city leaders, charitable donors, reformed businessmen, and families who had been helped by the foundation—filled the space.
Elena stood at the podium on the main stage. She wore an elegant dark green velvet gown, her hair swept up in a classy chignon. Gone was the terrified, exhausted gas station clerk wearing a stained polo shirt. In her place stood a confident, powerful, and radiant woman who commanded the respect of everyone in the room.
"Two years ago," Elena spoke into the microphone, her voice echoing clearly through the speaker system, "I was standing on a wet tile floor at two in the morning, holding a shelf to keep from falling over. I was terrified. I was alone. And I believed that the world had forgotten about me."
She looked out into the crowd, locating Dante sitting at the head table near the front. He sat with Sophia on his lap. The little girl, now almost two years old, wore a tiny matching green dress and was busy trying to put Dante’s silk pocket square on her head. Dante didn't stop her; he simply adjusted it like a tiny crown, smiling up at Elena with unbridled pride.
"I learned that night," Elena continued, her eyes glistening with happy tears, "that help doesn't always come in the package you expect. Sometimes, hope steps out of the dark when you least expect it. Today, our foundation promises that no woman in this city will ever have to give birth on a cold floor alone again. No woman will ever have to feel disposable."
The room erupted into thunderous applause.
As Elena stepped down from the stage, Dante stood up, holding Sophia in one arm while extending his other hand to help Elena down the steps.
"You were incredible," Dante murmured, kissing her forehead gently.
"We did this together," Elena said, reaching down to tickle Sophia’s belly, making the little girl squeal with delight. "Daddy, Mommy, and Sophia."
"Daddy!" Sophia repeated loudly, clapping her tiny hands together.

Dante’s breath caught in his throat. It was the first time she had said the word clearly. He looked down at the child he had claimed as his own, his chest swelling with an overwhelming emotion he had never known existed.
"Yes, baby," Dante whispered, pulling both Elena and Sophia into a tight, protective embrace. "Daddy’s here."
