Chapter 3 - The Fortress on the Hill

The Moretti estate sat perched high in the hills overlooking the bay, hidden behind iron gates and twenty-foot stone walls topped with security cameras and armed guards. It was less of a house and more of a fortress—a sprawling Tuscan-style villa constructed from dark timber and reinforced stone.
For the next three weeks, the estate became Elena’s entire universe.
She was given a suite of rooms on the second floor that overlooked a manicured courtyard. A private nurse named Maria, hired personally by Dante, helped her recover and taught her the intricacies of caring for a newborn. For the first time in her life, Elena did not have to worry about where her next meal was coming from, whether her rent check would bounce, or if she could afford formula.
Yet, the golden cage felt terrifyingly fragile.
One evening, while pacing the courtyard to soothe a fussing Sophia, Elena spotted Dante sitting at an iron table near the fountain. Spread before him were thick manila folders, maps, and photographs. The ambient glow of the courtyard lanterns illuminated his profile—sharp, severe, burdened by unseen weight.
"She doesn't like the cold air," Dante remarked quietly without looking up from his files.
"She likes the sound of the water," Elena replied softly, taking slow steps toward him. "It calms her down."
Dante closed the folder he was reading—a file stamped with the crest of the State Senate—and looked at her. "You walk better now."
"Thanks to Maria. And you." Elena hesitated, sitting in the chair across from him. She rocked Sophia gently. "Dante... what is going to happen to us? We can't stay hidden here forever. Eventually, Senator Chen is going to find out where we are."
"Chen already knows you are with me," Dante said calmly. He reached out, his long fingers brushing lightly against Sophia’s tiny hand. The baby instinctively wrapped her fingers around his index finger. Dante’s dark eyes softened slightly at the contact. "He tried to serve a warrant yesterday through a corrupt judge. My attorneys shredded it before the ink was dry."
"Why is he so terrified of a newborn?" Elena asked, her brow furrowing. "I never wanted his money. When Marcus told me to get rid of the baby, I just walked away. I didn't ask for child support. I didn't threaten his political career."
"It isn't just about Marcus's reputation, Elena," Dante explained, his tone deadly serious. "Marcus isn't just an irresponsible kid. He was the chief executive of a holding company that Senator Chen used tolaunder money from illicit offshore operations. To keep Marcus clean for his own future political aspirations, Chen transferred fifty million dollars of black-market funds into a trust fund registered under a shell corporation."
Elena gasped. "What does that have to do with Sophia?"
"The trust fund," Dante leaned forward, "was legally tied to Marcus's direct bloodline to avoid inheritance tax secondary audits. When Marcus signed the initial corporate structure, he included a survival clause: if he died or became incapacitated, the entire control of that fifty-million-dollar fund automatically transfers to his firstborn child."
The realization hit Elena like a physical blow. Her breath caught in her throat. "Sophia doesn't just represent a scandal. She holds the key to his entire empire."
"Precisely," Dante said. "If Senator Chen controls Sophia, he controls the fifty million dollars. If you gain legal custody and establish her paternity through a court-ordered DNA test, you gain control of his entire financial network. And you can expose every dirty politician he has paid off for the past decade."
Elena looked down at the tiny baby in her arms. Sophia sneezed softly, completely unaware that her tiny existence was a dynamite stick under the foundations of state government.

"They won't just try to bribe me, will they?" Elena whispered, panic creeping back into her veins. "They're going to try to kill us."
Dante stood up, stepping around the table. He stood directly beside her chair, his imposing frame blocking out the chilly night wind. "Over my dead body, Elena. I gave you my word at two in the morning in a dirty gas station. No one touches you or this child while I breathe."
