Chapter 4 - The Unseen Ledger

The calm inside the Moretti estate was shattered four days later.

It was mid-afternoon when the sound of screeching tires echoed from the main driveway, followed instantly by the sharp, authoritative shouting of men. Elena sprang from her bed, clutching Sophia to her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs.

She hurried to the balcony overlooking the front courtyard. Down below, three black sedans had pushed past the outer security gates. Men in dark suits wearing tactical vests stamped with federal law enforcement insignias spilled out, firearms drawn.

Leading them was a tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke gray suit. He walked with the relaxed posture of someone who had never been said 'no' to in his entire life.

Senator Anthony Chen.

Dante stepped out onto the grand stone portico alone. He wore no jacket, no armor, and carried no visible weapon. Leo and six Moretti guards lined up behind him, their hands resting casually inside their coats.

"Dante Moretti!" Senator Chen’s voice boomed across the courtyard, laced with practiced political bravado. "You're harboring a kidnapped child and a fugitive mother! Hand them over, or my federal marshals will tear this dump down brick by brick!"

Dante didn't move an inch. He descended the stone steps with cool, measured grace, stopping just ten feet from the senator.

"Federal marshals?" Dante asked, his lips curving into a dry, mocking smile. "Funny. I called the District Attorney’s office five minutes ago. Those men aren't marshals, Anthony. They're private security contractors wearing fake patches you bought off the dark web."

Senator Chen’s expression hardened, his charming political mask slipping to reveal the ruthless monster beneath. "I don't care about your technicalities, Moretti. That girl has something that belongs to my family. Marcus was an idiot to mess with her, but I won't let a low-class gas station clerk destroy twenty years of my hard work."

"She is the mother of your grandchild," Dante said coldly. "And you left her to work night shifts on concrete while carrying your bloodline."

"She’s a nobody!" Chen snarled, stepping closer. "She’s a bug under my shoe! Give me the baby, Dante. I’ll make sure you get a handsome payout. Ten million dollars. Cash. Right now. Walk away from this."

Up on the balcony, Elena held her breath. Ten million dollars was an unfathomable sum of money. A fortune that could buy entire lives. She looked at Dante’s back, her heart in her throat, praying that the man who had saved her wouldn't sell her out.

Dante slowly reached into his breast pocket. The fake marshals instantly leveled their weapons at him, but Dante didn't pause. He pulled out a small silver lighter and a single cigarette. He flicked the lighter, spark catching, flame illuminating his dark eyes. He took a slow, deliberate drag and blew the smoke directly into Senator Chen’s face.

"I don't take bribes from weak men," Dante said softly. "And I don't sell children."

Chen’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson. "You think you can beat me? I own the judges! I own the police chief! By tomorrow morning, I will have an order signed declaring that girl unfit to be a mother. I will take that child legally, and you will be sitting in a federal prison for treason!"

"Try it," Dante replied, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "And I will release the ledger."

Senator Chen froze. The color instantly drained from his face, leaving him pale as salt. "What ledger?"

"The ledger Marcus kept in his private vault in Grand Cayman," Dante said smoothly, taking another puff of his cigarette. "The one listing every bribe paid to the state infrastructure committee. The one detailing the offshore accounts linked to your re-election fund. Did you really think your son was loyal to you, Anthony? He kept receipts. And two days ago, my men acquired them."

Chen swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly. "You're bluffing."

"Test me," Dante said. He pointed toward the heavy iron gates. "Get off my property before I lose my patience. And tell Marcus that if he sets foot in this city again, he won't be going to prison—he'll be going into the bay."

For a long, agonizing ten seconds, Senator Chen stared at Dante. The silence was deafening. Finally, the senator turned on his heel and slammed his foot into the door of his sedan. "We're leaving!" he barked at his men.

As the cars roared away, Dante stood alone in the courtyard, watching the dust settle.

Elena ran down the stairs, carrying Sophia. She burst through the double doors, her eyes wide. "Dante! Is it true? Do you really have the ledger?"

Dante turned to look at her. He stubbed out his cigarette against the stone wall. "No," he admitted quietly. "It was a bluff."

May you like

Elena stared at him, stunned. "A bluff? You just threatened a U.S. Senator with nothing?"

"I have twenty-four hours before his lawyers realize I was lying," Dante said, looking at her with absolute focus. "Which means we have exactly twenty-four hours to find the real ledger before he comes back with actual federal agents."
