Chapter 6 - The Trial of the Century

The storm that had been brewing over the state finally broke three weeks later, not in the dark alleys of the underworld, but in the blinding white light of the Federal District Courthouse.

The leaks had been catastrophic. Dante hadn't just handed the encrypted files to the District Attorney; he had broadcast them simultaneously to every major news network in the country. Within forty-eight hours, federal agents had raided Senator Chen’s estate, pulling the politician out in handcuffs before a sea of flashing camera bulbs.

Marcus Chen had tried to flee to South America, but Dante’s men had intercepted him at the airport, handing him over directly to the FBI.

Now, the courtroom was packed to maximum capacity. Cameras were barred, but hundreds of reporters sat in the gallery, pencils scratching furiously against notebooks.

Elena sat at the plaintiff’s table, dressed in a sleek, professional navy suit provided by Dante. Beside her sat her legal team—the top family law and corporate litigators in the country, fully retained by the Moretti estate.

Across the aisle sat Marcus Chen, dressed in a gray prison jumpsuit, looking pale, hollow, and defeated. Senator Chen sat behind him in the gallery, flanked by defense attorneys who looked as though they were attempting to anchor a sinking battleship.

"All rise," the bailiff barked as Judge Evelyn Vance took the bench.

The hearing was short, devastating, and absolute.

"In light of the comprehensive financial records, bloodline DNA testing, and sworn testimonies submitted into evidence," Judge Vance declared, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom, "this court finds that Marcus Chen has forfeited all parental rights due to severe endangerment and abandonment."

Marcus dropped his head into his hands.

"Furthermore," Judge Vance continued, turning her sharp gaze toward the legal team, "the court officially recognizes Sophia Santos as the sole legal beneficiary of the Chen Asset Trust, effective immediately. Control of the trust will be managed under a court-monitored conservatorship headed by her mother, Elena Santos, until the child reaches legal age."

Elena choked back a sob, placing a hand over her mouth. The sheer weight of months of fear, exhaustion, and poverty suddenly lifted from her shoulders. She was free. Sophia was safe. They were wealthy beyond their wildest dreams, but more importantly, no one could ever touch them again.

Judge Vance slammed her gavel down. "Court is adjourned."

The gallery erupted into noise. Reporters scrambled for the exits, photograhers shouted from the hallway, and attorneys rushed to shake Elena’s hand.

Elena turned around, looking past the chaos of the courtroom. Standing at the very back of the room, near the heavy double doors, was Dante. He wore a dark navy suit, his arms crossed over his chest, watching her with a calm, proud smile.

Elena pushed past the attorneys and stepped away from the table. She ran down the center aisle of the courtroom, completely ignoring the flashing lights and shouting crowds outside the doors.

She didn't stop until she threw her arms around Dante’s neck.

Dante caught her easily, wrapping his heavy arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet. He pulled her close, burying his face in her hair.

"You did it," Elena cried into his shoulder. "We did it."

"You did it, Elena," Dante whispered softly against her ear. "You survived."
