Chapter 8 - Shadow of the Past

Despite Dominic's transition to legitimate business, the remnants of the old Chicago syndicate did not go quietly.

A rival family, the Morettis, saw Dominic’s transition as a sign of weakness. They sought to strike one final blow to reclaim the territory Dominic was vacating.

One rainy afternoon, while Dominic was in the city finalizing the sale of his shipping docks, a security breach occurred at the estate. The alarms wailed, their high-pitched sirens cutting through the peaceful house.

Clara’s training kicked in immediately. She grabbed Leo from his crib, slipping down the hidden service corridor Dominic had shown her, leading directly to the reinforced safe room in the basement.

As she locked the heavy steel door from the inside, she heard gunshots echoing from the upper floors.

She held Leo close to her chest, rocking him in the dim light of the secure bunker. "Shh, sweet boy. You're safe. I’ve got you," she whispered, her voice steady despite the absolute terror clawing at her throat.

Through the security monitors inside the safe room, she watched the estate's highly trained guards swiftly neutralize the intruders. Within minutes, the threat was handled, but Clara's heart didn't stop racing until the safe room door opened.

Dominic stood there, drenched in rain, his face pale with a terror she had never seen on him before.

He saw Clara and Leo, safe and unharmed, and fell to his knees, wrapping his arms around both of them.

"I’m sorry, I'm so sorry," he muttered, his voice cracking.

"We are okay," Clara said, holding him tightly. "Dominic, we are okay. Your security worked. We are safe."

"This ends today," Dominic vowed, his eyes burning with absolute resolve. "No more threats. No more shadows."
