Chapter 5 - The Turning of the Tide

With Marco exposed and captured, the conspiracy within the hospital quickly unraveled. Under intense interrogation, Marco revealed that Dr. Alston had been blackmailed due to massive gambling debts. He had been turning a blind eye to Marco’s late-night visits to the pharmacy storage.

Dr. Alston was quietly removed from the hospital by federal authorities under the guise of an administrative suspension, ensuring no panic arose in the public eye.

With the poison completely gone from his system, baby Leo began to thrive.

Clara oversaw every single feed, every medication, and every developmental check. Within a week, Leo’s weight surged to five pounds, then five pounds eight ounces. His cheeks filled out, turning a healthy, rosy pink.

One evening, Dominic stood by the incubator, watching Leo wiggle his tiny toes. For the first time, the baby was out of the high-oxygen environment, breathing completely on his own.

"He looks like his mother," Dominic said softly.

Clara walked up beside him, leaning against the glass. "He has your chin, though. Stubborn."

Dominic let out a low, genuine laugh—a sound Clara had never heard before. It suited him. It washed away the harsh lines of strain on his face, revealing the incredibly handsome man beneath the stress.

"Thank you, Clara," he said, turning to face her. "You did what no one else could. You saved my family."

"I was just doing my job, Dominic."

"No," he said, stepping closer, closing the distance between them until Clara could feel the warmth radiating from him. "You went above and beyond. You put your life on the line. For me. For Leo."

He reached out, his hand gently cupping her jaw. Clara's breath caught in her throat. She knew who he was—the dangers of his world—but looking into his eyes, she saw only safety, warmth, and an intense devotion that took her breath away.

Before she could speak, Dominic leaned down and gently pressed his lips to hers. It was a soft, lingering kiss, filled with unspoken promises and a deep, blossoming hope.

When he pulled back, Clara smiled softly. "You still need to get some sleep, Mr. Castiglione."

"Only if you promise to be here when I wake up, Nurse Hayes."

"Always," she promised.
