Chapter 4 - A New Protector

The shadows lengthened across the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate, casting long, golden fingers through the tall windows of the study.

Adrian walked slowly back to his desk, where Hannah stood frozen, still trying to process the fact that the head butler had tried to assassinate her employer, and that her four-year-old daughter had not only witnessed it, but saved the mafia boss’s life.

“Hannah,” Adrian said, his tone softening noticeably as he looked at the exhausted young mother. “You and Ellie are no longer safe living in that apartment in Astoria. The Rossi family knows about the estate, and now that Vincent has failed, they will look for any vulnerability connected to me.”

Hannah’s heart skipped a beat. “We can move. I have some savings—`”

“You are not moving into another cramped apartment where you have to worry about rent, overdue electric bills, or whether you can afford your daughter's medication,” Adrian interrupted, crossing his arms. “Starting tonight, you and Ellie live here.”

Hannah’s eyes widened in shock. “Here? In the mansion? Mr. Moretti, I’m just a housekeeper. I can't live here.”

“You are not just a housekeeper anymore,” Adrian said firmly. “You are the head of the domestic staff, overseeing the entire estate. Your salary will be increased tenfold, effective immediately. Furthermore, Dr. Greene has already set up a permanent medical fund for Ellie. She will never go another day without her epinephrine, her medication, or anything else she needs.”

Ellie, who had been quietly playing with Rosie on the rug, looked up at her mother with wide, hopeful eyes. “Mommy? Does this big castle have a garden?”

“It has acres of gardens, Ellie,” Adrian answered before Hannah could speak. He walked over, kneeling down once more to be at eye level with the little girl. A faint, rare smile touched the corners of his lips. “And if you want, we can plant flowers together tomorrow.”

Hannah felt a lump form in her throat. For two years, since David died, she had carried the crushing weight of the world entirely on her own shoulders. She had fought tooth and nail just to keep a roof over their heads, terrified every single day that she would fail her children.

Now, looking at the most powerful and feared man in New York, she saw something no one else ever witnessed: a broken man finding his soul again through a little girl’s pure heart.

“Thank you, Mr. Moretti,” Hannah whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek, though this time, it was a tear of profound relief.

“Call me Adrian,” he said softly, standing up and extending a hand to help Hannah rise.

As Hannah took his hand, she knew their lives had changed forever. They were no longer just surviving; they were protected by the most powerful shadow in the city.
