Chapter 3 - The Traitor Revealed

Adrian stood up, his expression instantly transforming from one of deep vulnerability back into the cold, calculating strategist who commanded an empire.
He walked over to his large mahogany desk, picked up the secure internal phone, and pressed a single button.
“Vincent,” Adrian said, his voice ice-cold. “Bring me the security footage from the second-floor hallway between eleven-fifty and twelve-fifteen today. And bring Vincent Bellini to my study immediately.”
A brief pause hung over the line. “Mr. Bellini, sir? The head butler?”
“You heard me,” Adrian snapped. “Bring him now.”
Hannah watched the exchange, her heart pounding against her ribs. She didn’t understand what was happening, but she could sense the terrifying shift in the atmosphere.
“Mr. Moretti, what’s going on?” Hannah asked, her voice trembling.
“Someone tried to kill me, Hannah,” Adrian said flatly, turning his gaze back to her. “They put a tasteless, fast-acting neurotoxin in my wine. And thanks to your daughter, I am still standing here to find out who did it.”
Hannah gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. She looked down at Ellie in sheer disbelief.
Ten minutes later, the heavy oak door swung open. Vincent Bellini stepped into the room, holding a silver tray with a fresh glass of water. His posture was as impeccably straight as it had been for the last twenty years.
“You requested me, Mr. Moretti?” Vincent asked, his voice calm, steady, and respectful.
Adrian didn’t answer right away. He simply stared at the old man who had practically raised him within the organization—the man he had trusted more than anyone else alive.
“Vincent,” Adrian said quietly, leaning against the edge of his desk. “How long have you worked for my family?”
“Nineteen years, sir,” Vincent replied, his face a mask of serene loyalty.
“Nineteen years,” Adrian repeated. “In that time, you’ve seen me through wars, betrayals, grief, and fire. I trusted you with my home. I trusted you with my life.”
“And I have always honored that trust, Mr. Moretti.”
“Have you?” Adrian’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. He motioned toward the computer monitor on his desk, which had just begun playing a high-definition security loop.
The video showed the beverage room. Hannah was seen setting down the tray. Then, Hannah walked away to fetch water. For forty seconds, the room was empty—except for a small shadow slipping in from the hallway.
It was Ellie.
And right behind her, standing in plain view of the hidden pinhole camera tucked into the crown molding, was Vincent Bellini.
The video clearly showed Vincent reaching into his vest pocket, pulling out a tiny blue glass vial, and carefully dispensing three drops into the crystal wine decanter before swirling it smoothly.
Vincent’s calm demeanor cracked. His eyes darted to the screen, and the silver tray in his hands began to shake violently.
“Explain,” Adrian commanded, his voice like the crack of a whip.
Vincent dropped the tray. It hit the Persian rug with a dull thud, spilling the water. The old butler took a step back, realizing the trap was inescapable.
“They were going to kill my grandson, Adrian,” Vincent whispered, his voice breaking as tears filled his old eyes. “A rival syndicate—the Rossi family. They kidnapped Leo from his school. They said if I didn't put the poison in your wine, I would never see him alive again. I had no choice!”
Adrian walked slowly toward the old man. The distance between them shrank until Adrian was towering right over him.
“You should have come to me,” Adrian said, his voice dangerously low. “You think you are the only one who protects his family? You betrayed the hand that fed you for two decades. You betrayed my house.”
Before Vincent could speak, two armed security guards burst through the double doors, pinning the old butler’s arms behind his back and forcing him to his knees.
“Take him to the basement holding cells,” Adrian ordered without a flicker of emotion. “Let the Rossi family know that I am coming for every single one of them. And make sure Vincent is kept alive—he will watch his syndicate burn to the ground before he faces his final judgment.”
“Mr. Moretti! Please!” Vincent cried out as he was dragged backward out of the study.

The heavy doors slammed shut, leaving silence in their wake.
Adrian turned back toward Hannah and Ellie. The cold tyrant was gone once again, replaced by a man carrying an insurmountable debt of gratitude.
