Chapter 7 - The Grand Ballroom

The ballroom was deafeningly loud with polite chatter, classical string music playing softly over the speakers, and children running around in expensive princess costumes.

My mother spotted us first as we walked down the grand carpeted staircase into the center of the room. Her champagne flute stopped halfway to her mouth. Her eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror as she saw me walking calmly toward her, flanked by Josh and Julian.

"What... what are you doing here?" my mother stammered, stepping away from the mayor's wife and marching directly toward us, her face flushed with humiliation. "Have you lost your absolute mind? Security! Remove these degenerates immediately!"

Before security could even take a step forward, the classical string music abruptly cut off.

The soft background hum died instantly.

Every head in the ballroom turned toward the stage. Above the grand sweetheart table, the large projector screen—meant to loop a slideshow of Madison growing up—flickered to life.

Instead of baby photos, the screen flashed a massive, high-resolution document: VANCE FAMILY ESTATE AUDIT: FORENSIC FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES (2016–2026).

Gasps echoed through the room.

My father rushed out from a side office near the stage, his face pale and slick with sweat, shouting frantically at the audio booth. "Turn that off! Cut the power! This is private property!"

Julian stepped forward, holding a wireless microphone he had discreetly taken from the DJ booth. His voice echoed crisp and clear across the entire ballroom.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Julian announced calmly, his voice carrying an effortless authority. "Welcome to Madison's birthday celebration. Before we enjoy the cake, I thought it would be educational to look at who is actually paying for this magnificent party."

Charlotte dropped her designer handbag, her face draining of all color. "Dad! Do something! Make them stop!"

Arthur Vance lunged toward Julian, his hands balled into fists, looking ready to commit murder right there in front of high society. "You ungrateful, treacherous little bastard!" my father roared, pointing a shaking finger at Julian and me. "I will ruin you! I will strip every cent you ever dreamed of touching!"

Josh calmly stepped into my father’s path, blocking him with immovable force. "I wouldn't do that, Arthur," Josh said smoothly. "Federal investigators are currently seizing your corporate assets downstairs. You don't own much anymore."
