Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

The head nurse charged into the room with security directly behind her, and my father’s hand was still locked tightly around my arm.

Then Nurse Dana spotted the oxygen mask lying on the floor and opened her mouth to scream an alarm that would summon every doctor on the floor.

"Get these people out of here!" I screamed, my voice cracking with a raw, bleeding fury I had never known lived inside me. "They just tried to kill my daughter!"

Security guard Miller, a broad-shouldered man who knew us well from our long hours by Emma's bed, didn't hesitate. He bypassed me and wrenched my father’s hand away from my arm with bone-crushing force.

"Hands off her!" Miller roared, stepping between us.

My mother stumbled back against the medical cart, her cream-colored slacks brushing against a biohazard bin. Her face flushed a mottled, ugly purple. Instead of looking at Emma, instead of showing an ounce of horror at what she had just done, she smoothed down her blouse with trembling, outraged fingers.

"How dare you?" my mother shrieked, pointing a manicured nail at me. "She is my flesh and blood! This ungrateful creature attacked her own mother over a petty argument! Arrest her!"

"Ma'am, step away from the bed," Nurse Dana commanded, her voice terrifyingly calm as she immediately restored Emma's oxygen mask, checking the readings on the machine with frantic speed. The rhythmic beeping normalized, but my heart felt like it had shattered into glass. "Security, escort these individuals out of the intensive care unit immediately. If you return, we will call the police."

"You can't do this!" My father puffed out his chest, trying to loom over Miller. "We are respectable people! We demand to speak to the hospital administrator!"

"Out," Miller said, grabbing my father by the elbow and steering him firmly toward the double doors.

My mother shot me one final, venomous glare—a look that promised total annihilation—before she let herself be herded out into the hallway, muttering curses about my insolence and the ruined birthday party.

Marcus collapsed into the chair beside Emma’s bed, burying his face in his hands as silent, shuddering sobs wracked his frame. Josh stood guard by the door, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked in his cheek.

"They're gone, Becca," Josh whispered, stepping over to put a steady hand on my shoulder. "They're gone. Focus on Emma."

I looked down at my little girl. Her face was pale, bruised around her temple where the heavy impact had left its mark, and completely still beneath the clear plastic mask. I reached down, my fingers trembling uncontrollably, and traced the back of her tiny hand.

I will protect you, I swore to the silent room. Even if I have to burn the whole world down to do it.
