Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

By 4:15 a.m., the hospital had settled into a heavy, artificial quiet. Marcus had finally fallen asleep in the hard plastic chair, his head leaned back against the wall, dark circles carved deep beneath his eyes. Josh had gone down to the cafeteria to grab black coffee, leaving me alone with the steady, mechanical breathing of my daughter.

My phone buzzed softly against my pocket.

I pulled it out, expecting another abusive text from Charlotte or a furious voicemail from my father demanding an apology. Instead, it was an email notification.

Subject: URGENT NOTICE CONCERNING YOUR ASSETS AND TRUST FUND ACCESS

I stared at the screen, my thumb hovering over the notification. It was from our family lawyer, Mr. Harrison, who managed the small educational trust my late grandmother had left for me and Charlotte years ago.

I unlocked the phone and opened the message.

Dear Rebecca, I am contacting you at the explicit instruction of your father, Arthur Vance. Effective immediately, he has exercised his authority as the primary trustee to freeze all remaining disbursements from your grandmother's educational fund. He stated that due to your 'gross financial negligence and public insubordination,' your allocation for emergency familial support has been rescinded and redirected to Madison’s upcoming trust.

My breath caught in my throat. That trust fund was supposed to cover Emma’s specialized pediatric physical therapy once she left the ICU—therapy that insurance wouldn't fully pay for. My father had literally stolen my daughter's chance at recovery to fund a seven-year-old’s unicorn party.

Before I could process the suffocating wave of rage, the ICU doors pushed open.

It wasn't Josh. It was a tall, sharp-featured man in a tailored charcoal suit carrying a leather briefcase. He scanned the room, his eyes locking onto me with cold precision.

"Are you Rebecca Wilson?" he asked, his voice low and professional.

"Who are you?" I demanded, stepping away from Emma’s bed so as not to disturb her monitors. "Visiting hours are over. How did you even get past security?"

The man flashed a leather-bound card holder. "My name is Julian Vance. I’m your cousin—your father’s brother Arthur’s estranged son. But right now, I'm here representing myself as an independent forensic accountant and corporate investigator."

I stared at him, bewildered. "Uncle Robert's son? I haven't seen you since we were kids. Why are you here?"

May you like

Julian walked slowly toward Emma’s bed, glancing down at her for a fraction of a second before looking back at me. There was no warmth in his expression, but there was an intense, calculating spark in his eyes.

"Because, Rebecca," Julian said quietly, pulling a thick Manila folder from his briefcase, "your parents didn't just freeze your trust fund. They've been systematically draining accounts across the family for years, hiding behind respectable society facades. And when I heard what your mother did in this room tonight... I decided it's time to pull down the curtain."
