Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Boardroom

While Julian worked his magic behind the scenes, legal papers flying electronically between federal courts and corporate offices, Marcus and I stayed glued to Emma’s bedside.
At 2:00 p.m., Dr. Patel walked into the room with a clipboard tucked under his arm, a gentle, cautious smile on his face.
"Mr. and Mrs. Wilson," Dr. Patel said, pulling up a rolling stool. "I have some good news. We reduced Emma's ventilator support this morning, and she is beginning to breathe more on her own. Her intracranial pressure has stabilized significantly."
A sob of pure relief escaped my lips, and Marcus pulled me into his arms, burying his face in my hair.
"Can she hear us?" I asked, wiping away hot tears of joy.
"She's still in a medically induced rest, but her brain activity is strong and coherent," Dr. Patel smiled. "Keep talking to her. She knows you're here."
I leaned over the bed, pressing my lips to Emma’s soft forehead, whispering how much I loved her, how brave she was, and how we were going to make everything right.
Meanwhile, across town in the gleaming glass tower of Vance Enterprises, my father was experiencing his own medical emergency—of the corporate kind.
According to Julian's real-time updates sent to Josh’s phone, Arthur Vance had arrived at his office at 9:00 a.m. only to find his corporate credit cards declined during a breakfast meeting. By 10:30 a.m., three separate banking partners had flagged his accounts for audit compliance review. By noon, the board of directors had called an emergency closed-door meeting to address the sudden freeze of operational funds.
My father was used to pulling strings behind closed doors. But Julian had cut every single one of them.
"He's panicking," Julian said, walking back into our temporary waiting room headquarters late that evening. He tossed his car keys onto the small table. "Arthur just tried to call three different judges he thought were in his pocket. None of them are returning his calls. When a man like that loses his money, people suddenly forget how to spell his name."

"And Charlotte?" I asked.
"Charlotte is currently screaming at the St. Jude Country Club event coordinator because her deposit check bounced," Julian laughed, leaning against the wall. "She thought it was a bank error. She has no idea that her royal unicorn kingdom is about to turn into a pumpkin."
