Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Friday passed in a blur of quiet medical milestones for Emma and breathless preparation for Saturday. Emma opened her eyes twice for a few seconds, looking confused and groggy before drifting back to sleep, but Dr. Patel assured us it was a monumental step forward.

By Friday evening, the social media feeds of my sister Charlotte were filled with frantic posts about "stressful vendor issues" and "negative energy ruining a little girl's special day." She had even posted a passive-aggressive public status update claiming that "some selfish family members are trying to steal joy from a seven-year-old."

The comments were filled with sympathetic messages from superficial acquaintances, completely unaware of the storm gathering on the horizon.

Saturday morning arrived with bright, merciless sunshine.

Marcus stayed by Emma’s side with Nurse Dana’s blessing, promising to call the second she woke up fully. Josh, Julian, and I dressed in sharp, professional attire—not mourning clothes, but armor.

"Are you ready for this?" Josh asked me as we stood outside the towering wrought-iron gates of the St. Jude Country Club.

Through the pristine glass double doors of the grand ballroom, we could see pastel pink balloons, towering cardboard unicorns, an ice sculpture shaped like a number seven, and dozens of upper-class guests sipping mimosas in designer dresses and tailored suits.

At the center of it all stood my mother, draped in an expensive designer silk dress, laughing brightly with the wife of the city mayor, while Charlotte fussed over Madison’s glittering princess tiara.

"I have never been more ready in my life," I said, lifting my chin.

We walked past the security podium without stopping. Julian flashed a laminated legal badge to the bewildered event manager, bypassed the registration desk, and headed straight for the audio-visual control booth overlooking the main ballroom.
