Chapter 9 - The Golden Autumn

The transition into her new life wasn’t instantaneous, but every day brought a new shade of color back into Kayla’s world.
With Aunt Sarah, a warm, soft-spoken high school art teacher, Kayla moved into a cozy two-bedroom apartment overlooking a community garden. The sterile, frightening corridors of Vanguard Biotech and the cold, oppressive walls of the Vale estate felt like a lifetime away.
Kayla enrolled in local high school classes online to finish her freshman year, spending her afternoons painting watercolors at the kitchen table while Aria napped in her crib nearby.
The trial of Marjorie and Richard Vale began in early autumn. Because Kayla was the primary witness and survivor of the corporate trafficking ring, her deposition was submitted via secure video link from the safety of her new living room.
She didn't feel scared when she saw her mother’s face on the monitor. She felt strong. She spoke clearly, detailing the illegal confinement, the night of the storm, and the desperate dash into the freezing rain to save her child.
The jury deliberated for less than four hours.
The verdict came down on a crisp Tuesday afternoon: guilty on all counts—conspiracy, human trafficking, child endangerment, and corporate fraud. Judge Henderson handed down consecutive maximum sentences, ensuring that neither Marjorie nor Richard would ever see freedom again.
When the news broadcast flashed the verdict across the television screen, Aunt Sarah popped a bottle of sparkling cider, pouring two glasses and handing one to Kayla.
They clinked the glasses together, the quiet chime ringing out like a bell of liberation.

“To new beginnings,” Sarah whispered, smiling warmly.
“To new beginnings,” Kayla echoed, looking down at Aria, who was cooing happily in her high chair, clutching a tiny, hand-knit yellow sock in her fist.
