Chapter 4 - The Sub-Basement Breach

The tension in the consultation room on the third floor could have cut glass.

Daniel sat across the scarred laminate table from Laura Grant and Detective Vance, a seasoned investigator with the city police department whose notebook looked like it had survived a war. Kayla had been sedated just enough to stop her shivering, resting in a secure room down the hall under police guard—not because she was a suspect, Daniel insisted, but because she was a primary witness to an abduction.

“Let’s go over the timeline again, Doc,” Detective Vance said, scratching his salt-and-pepper beard. “You’re telling me the girl claims she gave birth in her family’s house, was bundled into a car, escaped, and then realized her baby girl was swapped for a boy?”

“That’s what she’s saying,” Daniel replied, sliding a folder across the table. “And look at the boy in the NICU. We ran a rapid genetic cheek swab just to log baseline DNA for the state. Detective, the baby boy in our NICU is not Kayla’s child, nor does he share any genetic markers with Marjorie Vale or any known local family in our registry.”

Vance frowned. “An undocumented drop? Foreign adoption ring?”

“Or something much closer to home,” Laura added quietly. She opened her thick file on the Vales. “I dug deeper into Marjorie Vale’s background while you were in surgery, Doctor. The Vales aren’t just a wealthy suburban family. Marjorie’s husband, Richard Vale, is a senior partner at Vanguard Biotech—a private biomedical research firm specializing in neonatal cell regeneration and genetic sequencing.”

Daniel leaned forward. “Biotech? What does that have to do with a fourteen-year-old giving birth in a storm?”

“Vanguard was recently hit with federal inquiries regarding illicit clinical trials involving underage surrogate funding and unregistered neonatal harvesting,” Laura said, her voice dropping to a whisper. “And look at who sits on their board of directors and primary financial backers: a network of private shell companies linked directly to high-society adoption brokerages.”

Vance whistled softly. “You’re saying they’re running a baby farm?”

“I’m saying Kayla wasn’t just a runaway,” Laura said grimly. “She was a surrogate who wasn’t supposed to keep her baby. When she went into premature labor and bolted with the female infant, Vanguard security came after her. They caught her, took the girl back, and left a decoy male infant in the alley to cover their tracks and frame her for abandonment.”

Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the consultation room banged open.

A nurse stood there, panting, her face pale.

“Dr. Mercer! Come quick! Room 402—the mother, Marjorie Vale, she just tried to check her daughter out against medical advice. When security tried to stop her, she pulled a set of master keys, unlocked the restricted stairwell, and vanished into the basement tunnels!”

Daniel didn’t hesitate. He vaulted over a chair and sprinted down the corridor toward the service elevators.
