Chapter 10 - The Unshakable Light

Five years later.

The autumn leaves painted the neighborhood in brilliant shades of amber and gold.

A lively seven-year-old girl with bright, inquisitive eyes and a wild mane of chestnut hair skipped down the sidewalk, her small red backpack bouncing against her shoulders.

“Hurry up, Aunt Sarah! We’re going to be late for the community art festival!” Aria called back, turning around with a bright, infectious grin.

Kayla walked beside her, carrying a large cardboard box filled with framed watercolor paintings for the neighborhood exhibition. At nineteen, Kayla looked like a completely different person—confident, radiant, and full of purpose. She had graduated top of her high school class and was currently attending university on a full fine-arts scholarship, working part-time as a youth art mentor at the community center.

“We have plenty of time, sweetie, don’t run ahead,” Kayla laughed, quickening her pace.

As they turned the corner toward the community park, a familiar figure stood by the entrance booth, holding a clipboard and organizing the display panels.

Dr. Daniel Mercer.

He had stayed in touch over the years, becoming a trusted family friend who never missed a birthday, a graduation milestone, or a school art show.

“Well, if it isn’t the star artist of the gallery,” Daniel called out with a warm smile, walking over to help Kayla with the heavy box of paintings.

“Dr. Daniel!” Aria squealed, running over to give him a hug around the knees.

Daniel chuckled, lifting her up effortlessly into the air before setting her down. “How many times do I have to tell you, kiddo? It’s just Daniel, or Uncle Daniel if you prefer.”

“Uncle Daniel!” Aria corrected herself with a giggle. “Look at my painting! I painted a dragon flying over a rainbow hospital!”

Daniel peered at the colorful canvas Aria pulled from her backpack. “That is an absolute masterpiece. I’m framing this one for my office wall immediately.”

Kayla smiled, watching the two of them interact with a deep, abiding sense of peace in her soul. The trauma of her past no longer defined her; it had forged her into a protector, an artist, and a survivor.
