Chapter 6 - The Harbor Closure

“Daniel!” Vance’s voice boomed through the thick steel barrier, muffled and distant. “Stand back! We’re blowing the hinge!”
Daniel slammed his fists against the metal, but there was no time to wait. Through a small wired-glass window in the shutter, he watched Marjorie grab the infant carrier and wheel it rapidly down the dimly lit service tunnel toward the freight elevator.
He spun around and sprinted down a parallel maintenance cat-walk, tracking her through the overhead vents. The damp air burned his lungs, but adrenaline kept him moving. He knew the layout of this wing from his residency days—the freight elevator only had two stops: the sub-basement and the rooftop helipad of the abandoned research annex.
If Marjorie reached the roof before the police broke through the shutter, she would vanish into international airspace within ten minutes.
Daniel burst through a set of heavy push-bars, emerging out into the biting wind and driving rain of the rooftop helipad.
The gale-force downdraft from a twin-engine corporate helicopter nearly knocked him off his feet. The chopper’s landing lights cut through the dark sheets of rain, painting the wet concrete in blinding white glare.
Marjorie was already halfway across the tarmac, pushing the transport carrier on its rolling cart toward the open cabin door of the aircraft. A man in a dark tactical flight suit stood in the doorway, reaching out to grab the handle.
“Marjorie, stop!” Daniel yelled, his voice swallowed instantly by the roaring turbine engines.
She stopped, turning back against the wind. Her hair whipped across her face like black wires. She reached into her coat and pulled out a small, sleek digital detonator.
“One step closer, Doctor, and I detonate the remote structural charges on the lower stairwells,” she screamed over the roar. “Bridges down, tunnels blocked. You won’t even find your way out of the basement before we cross the maritime border.”
The tactical officer in the doorway grabbed the carrier, hauling it inside the cabin. Marjorie backed toward the open door, a triumphant smirk returning to her lips.
Suddenly, a blinding flash of red and blue light erupted from the stairwell exit behind Daniel.
Detective Vance and three tactical officers spilled onto the roof, their weapons drawn, followed by a small, slight figure wrapped in a heavy hospital blanket.
Kayla.
She had ripped the IV tape from her arm. Her bare feet hit the freezing concrete of the helipad, but she didn’t flinch. Her eyes locked onto the helicopter cabin.
“Give me my baby!” Kayla screamed, her voice cutting straight through the roar of the jet engines with supernatural force.
Marjorie froze on the helicopter step. For a brief second, human recognition flickered behind her cold eyes.
Taking advantage of the hesitation, Daniel lunged forward across the wet tarmac, sliding hard under the whipping landing gear. He grabbed Marjorie’s ankle just as she tried to step inside the cabin.

Marjorie shrieked, kicking backward and catching Daniel square in the chest. He lost his grip, tumbling backward onto the slick concrete.
The helicopter’s skids lifted off the ground. The cabin door slid shut with a heavy hydraulic thud.
