Chapter 5 - The Rooftop Extraction

The hospital’s sub-basement was a labyrinth of steam pipes, industrial laundry chutes, and rusted maintenance corridors that connected the main medical center to the old university research annex. The air tasted of damp concrete and ozone.

Daniel’s flashlight beam cut through the gloom, bouncing off dripping walls. Behind him, boots echoed on the metal grating—Detective Vance and two armed patrol officers had caught up at the stairwell entrance.

“Dr. Mercer, stay behind us!” Vance ordered, unholstering his service weapon with a crisp click.

“She’s heading toward the old loading docks,” Daniel called out, his breath pluming in the chill air. “That’s where the private delivery trucks from Vanguard Biotech drop off experimental reagents. If Marjorie is connected to them, there’s a freight elevator down here that bypasses city security entirely.”

They rounded a blind corner near the industrial incinerator.

There, standing beside a heavy steel sliding door marked AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY, was Marjorie Vale.

She wasn’t wearing her silk pajamas anymore. In her hand, she held a heavy-duty industrial crowbar, and resting on a metal pallet beside her was a custom, climate-controlled transport carrier—the kind used for moving fragile biological samples.

Inside the carrier, through a thick pane of reinforced Plexiglas, came a faint, healthy wail.

A baby girl.

“Stop right there, Mrs. Vale! Police!” Vance shouted, stepping into the corridor with his weapon raised.

Marjorie didn’t flinch. She slowly lowered the crowbar, turning to face them with a terrifying, serene smile that didn’t reach her cold eyes.

“You’re too late, Detective,” Marjorie said smoothly, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. “The courier chopper is already touching down on the roof pad of the research annex. By sunrise, this child’s unique genetic payload will be logged into our permanent sequencing vault in Geneva.”

“You’re talking about a human being, your own granddaughter!” Daniel shouted, stepping past the officers, his fists clenched. “Kayla is fourteen years old! How could you do this to her?”

Marjorie’s smile vanished, replaced by a flash of venomous contempt. “Kayla is an experiment that went rogue. A vessel designed to carry a proprietary gene therapy line for our primary international investors. She was never meant to bond with the specimen. When she stole my keys and ran into the rain, she endangered millions of dollars in research.”

“You sold your own flesh and blood,” Vance said, stepping closer, his cuffs already out. “Put your hands behind your back, Marjorie. You’re under arrest for kidnapping, child trafficking, and conspiracy.”

Marjorie looked at the transport carrier, then back at Vance. She slowly raised her hands—not to surrender, but to press a heavy red emergency override button mounted on the door frame behind her.

Clang-whirrr!

A massive steel fire shutter dropped from the ceiling, slamming down between Marjorie and the police officers, separating Daniel from the rest of the group in a fraction of a second.
