Chapter 9 - The Bonds We Choose

Years flew by like autumn leaves in the wind. I eventually retired from my position as Chief Floor Nurse, handing the stethoscope down to a younger generation, but my bond with the Carters remained unbroken. I watched Lily grow from a brave, quiet eight-year-old into a confident, brilliant young woman.

On a crisp October afternoon, I sat in the front row of a university auditorium. It was Lily’s graduation day from nursing school.

Claire sat to my left, tears of pride already shining in her eyes. Beside her was Noah, now a tall, handsome teenager with his sister’s protective streak built right into his posture. He kept an arm thrown over the back of his mother’s chair, occasionally leaning down to make her laugh.

When Lily’s name was called, the crowd erupted. She walked across the stage with grace, her cap sitting proudly on her dark hair. As she received her diploma, she caught my eye in the audience and gave a small, knowing nod.

After the ceremony, we met out on the campus lawn. Lily ran straight to her mother and brother, enveloping them in a massive group hug. When she pulled away, she walked over to me and handed me a small box.

"Open it," she smiled.

Inside was a brand-new medical supply tray, polished stainless steel, and resting on top was a pair of small, shiny medical scissors. Engraved on the blade were the words: To Nurse Sarah, who listened when nobody else would. Love, Lily.

"I chose pediatrics," Lily told me, her eyes bright with purpose. "I want to be the person who stands up for the kids who can't speak for themselves. Just like you did for me."

"You did the hard work, Lily," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "You always had the courage. You just needed a stage."
