Chapter 4 - Confrontation in Room 414

When Dr. Aris and I returned to Room 414, accompanied by two hospital security guards, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Mark was standing by the window, his back to his wife, staring out at the rainy parking lot. Claire was singing softly to the baby, her eyes bright with a manic kind of joy.

"Claire," Dr. Aris said gently, stepping into the room. "We need to talk to you and Mark. Securely."

Mark turned around instantly, his eyes darting to the guards. His hand went to his pocket. "What is the meaning of this? I told the nurse we don't need any more disruptions. My wife needs rest."

"Mark, stop," I said, stepping forward. "We know about the nursery logs. We know about the barcode swap. We know that the baby Claire is holding is legally and medically Noah, the firstborn twin."

Claire stopped singing. She looked between me and her husband, her face dropping. "What are you talking about? This is Eli. Mark, tell them. This is our Eli."

"Claire, sweetheart, don't listen to them," Mark said, his voice cracking as he rushed to her bedside. "They're making a mistake. The hospital is trying to cover up a clerical error."

"It wasn't an error, Mark," Dr. Aris said firmly. "You intentionally swapped the medical records. You did it to ensure the trust fund from Claire’s father wouldn't be canceled, and you used your wife’s grief as a shield."

Claire looked down at the baby in her arms. The child yawned, stretching his tiny fists. "Noah?" she whispered, the name sounding foreign on her tongue. "But... the doctor told me Eli didn't make it in the delivery room. Then Mark came in and said the doctor was wrong, that Eli was the one who survived."

She looked up at her husband, tears streaming down her face. "You told me Eli lived. You told me our boy was safe."

"He is safe!" Mark yelled, losing his composure. "He's right there! What difference does a name make? We get to keep our son, and we get the financial security we were promised! Why are you letting them ruin this?"

"Because it's a fraud, Mark," I said quietly. "And worse, you blamed Lily. You told your wife that Lily was jealous and wanted to hurt the baby, all because she was trying to protect her brother's true identity."

Claire’s eyes widened in horror. The realization of what her husband had done—not just to her, but to his own daughter—seemed to shatter something inside her. "Where is Lily?" she demanded, her voice suddenly strong, stripped of its previous frailty. "Where is my daughter?"
