The first thing I saw was the scissors.

The days following Mark’s arrest were a blur of legal proceedings, social workers, and medical re-evaluations. The hospital administration worked around the clock to correct the records, ensuring that Noah James Carter was properly registered as the living twin, and that a proper, dignified memorial could be arranged for Eli.

Mark was released on bail but was served with a strict restraining order. Claire, showing a reserves of strength she didn't know she possessed, immediately filed for divorce and full custody of both Noah and Lily. Though Lily was her stepdaughter, Claire had been her primary maternal figure for four years, and she refused to let the girl be caught in the fallout of Mark's criminal greed.

I visited them in their new, temporary room in the pediatric transitional wing. Noah was thriving, gaining weight rapidly. Lily was sitting on the edge of the bed, reading a picture book to him while Claire watched from an armchair.

"You look much better, Claire," I said, setting down a fresh chart.

"I feel lighter," she admitted, offering a genuine smile. "The truth is painful, but it's a clean pain. The lie was eating us alive. The police found out that Mark had been deep in day-trading debt. The trust fund wasn't just for the baby's future; it was his way out of financial ruin."

She looked over at Lily, who was gently letting Noah wrap his tiny hand around her index finger. "If it wasn't for her, I would have raised my son under a dead brother's name, surrounded by a mountain of deception. She saved us."

"How is Lily handling everything?" I asked quietly.

"She’s resilient," Claire said, though her eyes softened with concern. "But she has questions. She wonders why her father did it. We're going to start family therapy next week. We have a lot of healing to do."

As if hearing her name, Lily looked up. "Nurse Sarah?"
