Chapter 5 - The Fractured Family

The security guards escorted Mark out of the room. He didn't fight them, but he stared at me with a look of pure hatred as they led him away. The police had already been called; falsifying medical records and attempting insurance fraud using a deceased infant's identity were serious crimes.
As soon as the door closed behind them, Claire broke down. She held the baby tight against her chest, rocking back and forth, sobbing uncontrollably. I sat on the edge of her bed, offering a box of tissues, while Dr. Aris checked her post-op vitals to ensure the stress wasn't causing internal bleeding.
"I believed him," Claire wept. "I was so tired, so drugged up from the surgery. When he told me Eli was the one who survived, I just... I wanted it so badly. I didn't question it. And Lily... oh my god, Lily."
"Lily loves you, Claire," I said gently. "She wasn't trying to hurt anyone. She hid the bracelet in her shoe because she knew it was the only proof that something was wrong. She was protecting this baby."
"Bring her to me," Claire pleaded. "Please. I need to see her."
I went back to the waiting room. Lily was still there, sitting quietly. She looked up as I approached, her small face anxious. "Is my dad mad?"
"Your dad is talking to the police, Lily," I told her, kneeling down so we were eye-to-eye. "But your mom wants to see you. She knows the truth now. She knows you were being a hero."
Lily's bottom lip trembled. "She doesn't hate me?"
"Not at all. She needs you right now."
I guided Lily back into Room 414. The moment Claire saw her stepdaughter, she held out her free arm. Lily hesitated for a fraction of a second before running forward, throwing her arms around Claire’s neck. They cried together, a messy, painful, but necessary release of all the secrets and lies that had threatened to suffocate their family.

"I'm so sorry, Lily," Claire whispered into the girl's hair. "I'm so sorry I didn't believe you. Thank you for saving our boy. Thank you for saving Noah."
Lily pulled back, looking down at the baby. "He looks like a Noah," she said softly, a tiny smile finally breaking through her tears.
