Chapter 7 - The Road to Healing

Six months passed. The hospital routine marched on, with new patients and new stories filling the rooms of the maternity ward, but I often found myself thinking about the Carter family. One rainy Tuesday afternoon, I was surprised to see Claire walk through the double doors of our unit, carrying a noticeably bigger, incredibly chubby baby in a blue stroller. Lily walked beside her, holding a diaper bag.
"Look who it is!" I called out, waving them over to the central desk.
Noah was now half a year old, with a tuft of brown hair and bright, curious eyes that scanned the nurses' station. Lily had grown an inch, her dark hair neatly braided, wearing a bright new pair of red sneakers—both of them on her feet this time.
"We wanted to come visit," Claire said, hugging me warmly. "We just finalized the legal name correction certificates and the estate restructuring. It’s officially over. The trust fund was successfully converted by the courts into a joint account for both Lily and Noah, completely independent of their father's control."
"And Mark?" I asked hesitantly.
"He pled guilty to fraud and reckless endangerment of a minor," Claire said, her tone calm and resolved. "He’s serving a short sentence, followed by intensive probation. He surrendered his parental rights to Lily. I officially adopted her last month."
Lily beamed, reaching over to pat Noah’s stomach. "I’m his legal big sister now. For real."
"You always were, Lily," I told her. "But it's nice to have the paperwork catch up to reality."

We walked down to the cafeteria together to grab coffee. Claire explained how therapy had helped Lily open up about the fears she had harbored before the birth—fears that her father had amplified by telling her she would be a burden once the new baby arrived.
"He was trying to isolate her so she wouldn't tell me what she saw," Claire sighed, shaking her head. "He almost succeeded. But her love for her brother was stronger than her fear of her dad."
