Chapter 9 - A New Dawn

The applause that eventually rippled through the grand ballroom started hesitantly, led by Viktor from the corner of the room, before swelling into a genuine, rolling wave of admiration. Damian didn't flinch or sneer at the crowd; instead, he simply tightened his grip on my hand and offered a polite, dignified nod.

Later that evening, as the string quartet played a soft waltz, Damian guided me onto the polished dance floor while Lila happily occupied herself with a plate of chocolate-covered strawberries at a corner table under the watchful, protective eye of Viktor.

"You look breathtaking tonight, Elena," Damian murmured, his strong hand resting securely on the small of my back as we moved in time with the music.

A blush crept up my cheeks, warmth spreading through my chest. "Thank you, Damian. I still can't believe this is real. Six months ago, I was just a desperate mother scrubbing dishes in your kitchen."

"Six months ago, I was a bitter, dying man surrounded by enemies and waiting for the end," Damian corrected softly, his dark eyes looking deep into mine with absolute sincerity. "You and Lila didn't just walk into my house, Elena. You walked into my soul and brought me back to life."

I rested my head against his shoulder, inhaling the clean, familiar scent of cedar and cologne that always made me feel safe. "We found each other just when we needed it most."

The music swelled, echoing off the high vaulted ceilings of Grayhaven House, carrying away the ghosts of violence and fear that had haunted its halls for generations. In their place stood a new legacy—one built not on intimidation and blood, but on resilience, healing, and an enduring, unbreakable love.

As the dance concluded, Damian pulled back just enough to look down at me, a nervous tension flickering across his usually unshakeable features—a tension far greater than any he had ever faced in the boardroom or the alleyways of Baltimore.

He slowly reached into his tuxedo jacket, pulling out a small velvet box.

My breath caught in my throat.

"Elena," Damian began, his voice steady yet filled with deep emotion. "I never planned on loving anyone. I never believed I deserved a family. But you and Lila showed me that light can find its way into the darkest corners." He opened the box, revealing a stunning diamond ring that caught the sparkling light of the crystal chandeliers overhead. "Will you stay with me forever? Will you make this house a true home?"
