Chapter 5 - Blood in the Marble Hallway

The heavy thud of boots echoed through the vaulted marble corridors of Grayhaven House, shattering the quiet evening. I didn't hesitate. I scooped Lila into my arms, her little hands gripping my shoulders in terror as she sensed the sudden shift in the air.
"Hold on to Mommy, sweetheart," I signed frantically, rushing toward the tall mahogany bookcase in the corner of the study.
I pressed the carved wooden catch behind a volume of Shakespeare, and the heavy shelf clicked and swung outward, revealing a reinforced steel panic room equipped with monitors, emergency supplies, and a plush cot. I bundled Lila inside, crouching down beside her as I pulled the heavy steel bolt shut, sealing us in the dim, humming sanctuary.
Through the high-definition monitor mounted on the wall, I could see the live feeds from the security cameras across the mansion.
My breath caught in my throat as I watched the screen. Marcus and four armed mercenaries dressed in tactical black gear were swarming the grand hallway outside the study. They moved with terrifying efficiency, weapons raised, clearing rooms one by one.
Suddenly, Viktor stepped out from behind a marble pillar, a submachine gun leveled at the lead mercenary. Before Marcus could react, Viktor opened fire, dropping two of the guards instantly. Glass shattered, and deafening gunshots echoed through the halls, rattling the walls of our sanctuary. Lila whimpered, burying her face in my neck, her small hands covering her ears. I wrapped my arms around her, whispering silent prayers against her hair.
On the monitor, Marcus ducked behind a heavy mahogany console, screaming orders to his remaining men. "Flank him! Flush him out! The boss is weak—he's finished!"
Then, shadows shifted near the grand staircase.
Damian stepped out into the open hallway, moving with calculated, lethal grace. Despite the poison still lingering in his veins, his aim was infallible. Two quick, suppressed shots rang out, and Marcus’s last remaining mercenary collapsed onto the polished marble, lifeless.
Marcus froze, his eyes widening in pure horror as he stared down the barrel of Damian’s pistol.
"You..." Marcus stammered, dropping his weapon as it clattered against the floor. "You should be dead... the poison..."
Damian walked slowly toward the traitor, his face devoid of mercy. "You underestimated my resilience, Marcus. And worse... you brought violence into a home where an innocent child lives."

With a swift, devastating strike, Damian brought the butt of his pistol down against Marcus’s temple, sending the traitor crashing unconscious onto the floor.
Silence descended upon the mansion once more, broken only by the distant patter of rain against the glass.
