Chapter 7 - Healing Wounds

The weeks following the breach at Grayhaven House brought a profound sense of tranquility that the estate had never experienced in its long, shadowed history. The lingering traces of the neurotoxin were completely flushed from Damian’s bloodstream, confirmed by a team of independent, trustworthy physicians whom Viktor personally vetted.
With his health fully restored, Damian began the monumental task of restructuring his organization, purging the remaining corrupt elements and shifting his empire toward legitimate business investments in real estate, technology, and community development across Baltimore. The fear that once defined his name was gradually replaced by a quiet, formidable respect.
Inside the mansion, life took on a rhythm that felt remarkably like a real family.
Every afternoon, once Lila finished her homeschool lessons at the mahogany dining table, she would march straight into Damian’s expansive home office with a stack of picture books. Damian, once notorious for his cold isolation, cleared his schedule every day at three o'clock without fail. He would sit in his leather armchair, pull Lila onto his lap, and patiently read stories to her, using exaggerated facial expressions and basic sign language he had secretly learned from instructional cards and late-night practice.
I stood in the doorway of the study one crisp December afternoon, leaning against the frame with a cup of hot chamomile tea in my hands, watching the two of them.
Lila was pointing excitedly at a picture of a golden retriever in a storybook, signing doggy! rapidly with her small hands.
"Yes, Lila," Damian said, his deep voice carrying a gentle amusement as he mirrored her signs. "A very big doggy. Would you like to get a real one for the estate?"
Lila’s eyes widened with pure delight, and she clapped her hands together, nodding vigorously.
Damian looked up, catching my gaze from across the room. A warm, affectionate smile touched his lips—a look reserved entirely for us. He motioned for me to join them.
"Come in, Elena," Damian said softly. "Stop hiding by the door. We're discussing important canine acquisitions."
I walked over, smiling as I handed him his cup of tea. "A dog? In Grayhaven House? Viktor will have a heart attack if there's muddy paw prints all over his polished marble."
May you like
"Viktor will survive," Damian chuckled, taking a sip of the tea. "In fact, Viktor is already looking into golden retriever puppies in the tri-state area. Softness is apparently contagious in this household."
I laughed, sitting down on the edge of the sofa. For the first time in my life, I felt truly safe. The darkness of our pasts felt miles away, washed clean by the rain and the unexpected grace of a little deaf girl who had dared to touch a wounded heart.
