Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Syndicate

The rain continued to lash against the reinforced glass windows of Grayhaven House as autumn deepened into a bitter November. Inside, however, the atmosphere was deceptively warm. Damian had moved from his bed to an oversized leather armchair near the fireplace, wrapped in a cashmere blanket. Lila sat on the plush rug beside him, carefully placing colorful stickers across a cardboard crown she had made for him.

"Look, Your Majesty," I signed to Damian, pointing to the crown resting crookedly on his dark, wavy hair.

Damian offered a small, amused smile, carefully adjusting the paper crown so it wouldn't slip. To anyone else, the image of the ruthless syndicate leader wearing a toddler's paper crown would have been laughable; to me, it was a testament to the strange, healing transformation happening within these stone walls. Day by day, under Lila's innocent persistence and my attentive medical care, the heavy black poison in Damian’s system was slowly losing its grip. His color was returning, and his breathing was no longer a daily struggle.

But safety in our world was always an illusion.

The heavy oak doors of the study burst open without warning. Viktor strode in, his face etched with grim urgency, followed closely by a pale-faced estate guard.

"Boss," Viktor said, his voice dropping to a harsh rumble. "We have a breach at the eastern gate. It’s Marcus."

Damian’s expression hardened instantly, the warmth vanishing from his face as if it had never existed. The man sitting in the leather chair was no longer a recovering patient; he was the apex predator of Baltimore. His eyes flashed with cold fury.

"Marcus," Damian growled, gripping the armrests of his chair. "The traitor who slipped the neurotoxin into my vintage Bordeaux. I thought he fled to Philadelphia."

"He did," Viktor replied, stepping forward and laying a heavy, encrypted tablet on the mahogany desk. "But he realized you weren't dying. Word leaked from one of the corrupt doctors on our payroll that your heart rate has stabilized. Marcus came back to finish the job himself. He brought a cleanup crew."

My breath hitched in my throat. I instinctively pulled Lila back behind my skirt, my heart pounding against my ribs. "A cleanup crew? In the house?"

"They're bypassing the perimeter alarms using an insider frequency," Viktor said, casting a sharp look toward the hallway. "Boss, you aren't at full strength yet. You can't fight a tactical assault in your current condition."

Damian slowly stood up, pushing the cashmere blanket aside. He swayed for a fraction of a second, but his jaw set in a hard, unbreakable line. He reached into the hidden compartment beneath the desk and pulled out a sleek, suppressed pistol, checking the magazine with expert precision.

"I built this empire with my bare hands, Viktor," Damian said softly, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. "I will not let a rat like Marcus tear it down in my own living room." He turned his dark gaze toward me, his expression softening just a fraction. "Elena. Take Lila into the panic room behind the bookcase. Lock the steel bolt from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Viktor."

"Damian—" I started, fear gripping my chest.

"Go!" he commanded, stepping past us toward the door. "Viktor, secure the perimeter. Let's welcome our guest."
