Chapter 6 - The Collapse

Back in the cabin, the monitors flickered and died. Smoke poured from the processors. Kael scrambled to pull the plugs, but the surge was too powerful.

“Lena!” I screamed.

She collapsed, her body limp. The blue light on her wrist faded to a dull gray and then vanished completely.

“Is she breathing?” Jonah asked, rushing over.

Her chest rose and fell, shallowly. Kael checked her pulse. “It’s weak. But she’s alive.”

Miles away, the Halcyon estate went black. The servers exploded in a shower of sparks. The Vales, trapped in their own lair, watched as the life’s work they had built upon the suffering of others turned into useless slag. They had lost the data, the connection, and the control.

But we weren't out of the woods.

As soon as the system went down, Kael’s tablet lit up with a red alert. “The Vales are coming. They know exactly where we are. They tracked the signal bounce.”

I stood up, grabbing the emergency bag. “We have to move.”

“Where?” Jonah asked. “There’s nowhere left to run.”

“We don’t run anymore,” I said, looking at my unconscious sister. “We fight.”
