Chapter 5 - The Digital Siege

The setup was elaborate. Kael and his team hooked Lena up to a series of monitors and neural interfaces that looked like something out of a science fiction movie.

“This is going to be painful,” Kael said. “You’re going to be mentally projecting your consciousness into the Halcyon mainframe. You have to navigate the security protocols while simultaneously uploading the viral code I’ve written.”

I held Lena’s hand, feeling the tremors in her fingers. “I’m right here, Lena. I’m not going anywhere.”

“Ready,” she whispered.

As soon as the machines hummed to life, Lena went rigid. Her eyes rolled back, and the blue letters on her wrist flared with blinding intensity. On the monitors, code began to waterfall, a sea of green and blue numbers.

In the virtual space, Lena was walking through the halls of the basement. She could see the Vales—they were frantically trying to stabilize the servers.

‘I’m in,’ she said, her voice sounding strange, layered, as if coming from multiple sources.

She moved toward the central core, a pillar of light in the digital landscape. But it was guarded. A firewall—an avatar of Dr. Corinne Vale—blocked her path.

‘You don’t belong here, L-07,’ the avatar said, its voice cold.

‘I’m not L-07,’ Lena replied, her voice echoing with digital thunder. ‘I am Lena.’

She didn’t fight the avatar; she bypassed it. She used the very system they had built to contain her to rewrite the core programming. She started deleting the “Subject” designations and replacing them with human identities.
