Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Ten years later.

I stood on the porch of our house, looking out over the ocean. Lena was coming home from college today—she was studying architecture, wanting to build things that were solid, grounded, and safe for everyone.

I pulled out my phone and checked the news. Another anniversary of the Halcyon closure. The facility had been turned into a park, a place where families came to walk, play, and live their lives without fear.

I looked at my left wrist. The scar was still there, a thin, silver line, but it was just skin. It was just a memory.

Lena’s car pulled into the driveway. She hopped out, her hair longer, her smile radiant. She ran up the porch steps and hugged me tightly.

“How’s the project?” I asked.

“It’s beautiful,” she said. “It’s a design for a community center. Lots of light, lots of space. No locks.”

I smiled. “Sounds perfect.”

The sun began to set, casting a warm, golden light across the horizon. We sat on the porch, watching the waves roll in. There were no humming machines, no cold white lights, no monitors measuring our heartbeat.

Just the sound of the wind, the smell of the salt air, and the peace of a life truly our own. We hadn't just escaped the experiment; we had redefined ourselves. We were Maya and Lena, sisters who had been created in a lab but reborn in the light of our own choices.

And as the first stars appeared, I knew that for the first time in our lives, the future wasn't something to fear. It was just another day, waiting to be lived.
