Chapter 4 - The Resistance

Kael drove us to a safe house in the mountains—a cabin that looked like a hunting lodge but was reinforced with steel plates and high-grade surveillance equipment. Jonah met us there, his face haggard.

“You’re safe here for now,” Jonah said, pouring us tea. “But we need to talk about what you are.”

Over the next few days, we learned the truth. Halcyon was the tip of an iceberg called the 'Evolution Initiative.' They wanted to create a human interface that could store massive amounts of data and perform complex calculations—essentially, human supercomputers. We were the failed prototypes, or so they thought. The fire wasn't an accident; it was a purge. They thought we had died in the flames.

“Why did they find us now?” I asked.

“Because you’ve reached the age of activation,” Jonah explained. “Your physiology is maturing. The silver in your blood is reacting to your hormones. That’s why the blue letters appeared.”

I looked at my wrist, where the scar was now sensitive to touch. “How do we stop it?”

“We can’t just stop it,” Kael interjected. “We have to disable the signal.”

Lena, who had been sitting quietly, looked up. Her eyes were bright, almost glowing. “I know how to disable it. It’s in the basement. The master node. If I can access it from here, I can send a feedback loop that will shatter the entire system.”

“You’d be risking your life,” Jonah warned. “The feedback could fry your own neural network.”

Lena looked at me. There was no fear in her eyes, only a quiet, resolute strength. “If I don’t do it, they’ll keep hunting us. And they’ll keep hurting others. Maya, I’m tired of being a project. I want to be a person.”

I knew she was right. We had spent our whole lives running. It was time to stop.

We began to plan. We needed to infiltrate the server room beneath the Vale estate, but not physically. Lena would have to act as a bridge.
