Chapter 9 - The Trial by Fire

The SUV came to a halt fifty feet from the house. The doors opened, and three figures stepped out into the light of the porch lamps.

Vanessa Bellini stepped forward, her expensive clothes disheveled, her eyes wild and unhinged. Beside her stood Hector, a hulking hitman with a heavy automatic pistol, and another armed enforcer.

"Dominic!" Vanessa screamed over the falling rain, her voice shrill and crazed. "You ruined my family! You ruined my life! You gave my father to the Feds!"

Dominic stood at the top of the porch steps, completely unbothered, his hand resting inside his coat pocket. "You ruined yourself, Vanessa. You and your father built a house of cards on human suffering. It was always going to fall."

"Where are they?" Vanessa shrieked, gesturing wildly with her gun toward the house. "Where is that street rat and her filthy little bastards? I'm going to make you watch me put a bullet through their heads!"

Dominic’s silver-gray eyes narrowed into slits of pure, lethal ice. "You shouldn't have said that."

Hector raised his automatic pistol, taking aim at Dominic's chest. "End of the line, Vale."

Before Hector could pull the trigger, three distinct silenced cracks echoed from the dense pine forest around the driveway.

Hector dropped instantly as a bullet caught him in the shoulder. The second enforcer was knocked off his feet by a high-caliber round to his thigh. Both men hit the wet gravel, screaming in pain, their weapons sliding across the driveway.

Vanessa gasped in horror, spinning around. From the shadows of the trees, Marco and eight heavily armed, tactical Vale security officers emerged, weapons trained squarely on her.

Vanessa dropped her gun to the wet ground, shaking uncontrollably, her face twisted in utter disbelief. "How... how did you know?"

"I owned this territory before you were born, Vanessa," Dominic said coldly, stepping down the stairs. He walked up to her, looking down at the broken, vengeful woman who had tried to destroy his family. "You thought you were coming here to ambush me? You were walking into a trap the moment you crossed the state line."

Police sirens suddenly wailed in the distance, blue and red lights flashing through the trees as local authorities and Federal marshals closed in on the property.

"Take them away," Dominic ordered Marco quietly.

As the federal agents moved in to handcuff Vanessa and her injured men, Vanessa glared at Dominic one last time. "You think you're clean, Dominic? You're a Vale! You'll always be a monster!"

Dominic looked at her with complete detachment. "My father was a monster. I am a father. There's a difference."

He turned his back on her as the police led her away into the night, ending the reign of the Bellini family forever.
