Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By 2:00 AM, the storm outside had escalated into a full gale. Inside the war room of the Vale estate, twenty senior lieutenants and captains sat around a massive mahogany table. Maps of Chicago, shipping routes, and surveillance photos of Bellini strongholds were spread across the surface.

Dominic stood at the head of the table, wearing a crisp black suit, stripped of his necktie. The warmth he had shown in the hospital was entirely gone, replaced by the terrifying aura of the absolute monarch of the Chicago underworld.

"Anthony Bellini believes he can bully us in our own city," Dominic spoke, his voice cutting through the room like a razor. "He believes that because my father is dead, the Vale family has grown weak. He believes he can use my sons as leverage."

A murmur of outrage rippled through the older captains. The rule of the old-school mafia was clear: families and children were untouchable.

"Boss," spoke Frank, a veteran captain who had served Dominic's father for thirty years. "The Bellinis have two hundred soldiers arriving at O'Hare and Midway as we speak. If we hit them now, it's an all-out war. The Federal authorities will get involved."

"The Feds are already watching," Dominic replied coldly. "Which is why we aren't going to fight a war on the streets. We are going to cut off the head of the snake."

Dominic pulled a black binder from his desk and slammed it onto the table. "For five years, my father and Anthony Bellini ran an illegal human trafficking and extortion ring through the docks—something I explicitly forbade when I took over. They used my name, and they used my financial networks to launder the money. They used this operation to fund their alliance."

The captains exchanged uneasy glances.

"I have the master ledgers," Dominic continued. "Every account, every corrupt politician, every Bellini asset on the East Coast. Tonight, we turn these over to the Special Task Force of the FBI."

The room erupted in shock.

"Boss!" Frank yelled, standing up. "You're handing evidence to the Feds? That's treason against the Commission! You'll ruin us all!"

Dominic pulled a heavy silver revolver from his coat and placed it deliberately on the mahogany table. "The ledgers implicate Anthony Bellini, Vanessa Bellini, and my father's dead loyalists. It clears our core legitimate shipping businesses. I am tearing down the corrupt foundation my father built. Anyone who wants to stay with me will transition to clean, legitimate operations by the end of the year. Anyone who wants to stay in the gutter with Bellini..." He looked around the room, his silver eyes locking onto each man. "...can leave this room right now. But you leave empty-handed."

Silence descended upon the war room. The captains looked at the revolver, then at the absolute determination in their young boss's eyes. They knew Dominic Vale didn't make empty threats.

One by one, the captains nodded.

"We're with you, Dominic," Frank said quietly, taking his seat. "Your father was a monster. It's time this family had a real leader."

"Good," Dominic said. "Marco, execute Phase One. Seize the Bellini armories in the city. Arrest their forward scouts. And notify the Federal prosecutors that Mr. Vale has a gift for them."

Dominic picked up his gun, tucked it into his holster, and walked toward the door.

"Where are you going, Boss?" Marco asked.

"To pack," Dominic said. "My family is waiting."
