Chapter 2 - The Confrontation on the Asphalt

The cold Chicago rain felt like needlepricks against Dominic’s skin as his polished Italian leather shoes hit the muddy asphalt. The roar of the Cadillac’s engine idle was the only sound competing with the howling wind. Vanessa’s hysterical shrieks from inside the luxury vehicle faded into white noise as Dominic stepped into the glow of the failing streetlamp.

Claire turned toward the glare of the headlights, shielding her eyes with a raw, calloused hand. When she recognized the hulking figure approaching through the downpour, all the color drained from her face. She took an involuntary step back, pulling both boys behind her torn brown work coat like a bird shielding her chicks from a hawk.

"Dominic," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the storm, yet it carried across the narrow street like a thunderclap.

Dominic stopped five feet away. Up close, the damage of five lost years was agonizingly clear. Her once-luminous skin was hollowed at the cheeks, dark circles bruised the space under her eyes, and her hands—hands that used to paint delicate canvasses in light and shadow—were cracked and stained with grease. But her posture remained fiercely protective.

"Dominic, stay away," she said, her voice trembling but firm. "You have no business here."

"Claire..." Dominic’s voice cracked—a sound his lieutenants had never heard in his entire life. His gaze dropped from her face to the two young boys peeking from behind her coat.

The taller one, despite shivering violently, stepped slightly in front of his mother. His jaw was set, his small fists clenched at his sides. The silver-gray eyes locked onto Dominic’s with a mixture of terror and defiance. Beside him, the smaller boy coughed deeply, a painful, wet sound that racked his thin frame.

"Who are they, Claire?" Dominic demanded, though his heart already knew the answer. "Tell me."

"They're my sons," she said defensively, her chin lifting. "They have nothing to do with you or your world."

"Do not lie to me!" Dominic stepped closer, and Claire flinched, pulling the children back further. Dominic immediately froze, the sight of her fear striking him deeper than any knife. "They have my eyes, Claire. Look at them. They are Vales."

"They are Bennetts," she spat, a sudden flash of the fierce woman he remembered igniting in her tired eyes. "You gave up any right to them the day you let your father drive me out of the city with a gun to my head and a check I never cashed!"

Dominic’s breath hitched. "What did you say? My father...?"

Before Claire could answer, the door of the Cadillac slammed shut. Vanessa stepped out into the rain, carefully stepping over puddles in her Christian Louboutin heels, holding an umbrella her bodyguard frantically held over her head.

"Dominic, what is the meaning of this filth?" Vanessa sneered, looking down her nose at Claire and the children. "Who is this beggar, and why are we idling in the slums? We are late for dinner with my father."

The taller boy looked at Vanessa, then at the massive armored car, and finally back at Dominic. "Mom," he muttered softly, tugging her coat. "Is this the bad man you told us about?"

The words tore through Dominic’s chest. He looked at Claire, his mind racing, trying to reconstruct the pieces of a reality he thought he had understood for five years. He had been told Claire took five million dollars from his father to disappear with another man. He had spent half a decade believing she was a mercenary who used his affection. But standing here, looking at her pulling scrap metal in the freezing rain while his sons starved, the lie disintegrated into dust.

"Get in the car," Dominic said, his voice dropping an octave into the lethal tone that commanded Chicago’s underworld.

"Excuse me?" Vanessa snorted. "Dominic, you cannot be serious—"

"Not you, Vanessa," Dominic said without looking at her. His eyes remained fixed on Claire and the boys. "Claire. Kids. Get in the car. Now."

"No," Claire snapped, her eyes wide with panic. "I am not going anywhere with you, Dominic. You chose your empire. You chose your legacy. Leave us alone!"

The smaller boy coughed again, dropping to his knees on the freezing wet ground. Claire gasped, dropping to her knees beside him, wrapping her arms around his shivering body. "Leo! Leo, baby, stay with me..."

Dominic didn't hesitate. He stripped off his heavy cashmere overcoat, dropped to his knees in the mud next to her, and wrapped the warm, dry coat completely around the coughing child. He then reached out, effortlessly scooping the sick boy into his massive arms.

"Dominic, let him go!" Claire cried out, reaching for her son.

"He's burning up, Claire, and he's coughing blood," Dominic said fiercely, his silver eyes locking onto hers with absolute authority. "You can hate me all you want tomorrow. But tonight, my son is going to a hospital, and you are coming with me. Move!"
