Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Dark

The Michigan lake house was surrounded by high pine trees and the gentle, rhythmic crashing of waves against the shore. It was an estate hidden away from the world, secured by state-of-the-art security systems and a small, trusted team of guards personally vetted by Marco.
Claire sat in the expansive living room, wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, staring into the roaring fireplace. The house was magnificent—warm wood beams, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the misty lake, and a quiet tranquility she hadn't experienced in half a decade.
In the upstairs bedroom, the twins were finally sleeping peacefully in massive, comfortable beds. Leo's fever had completely broken, his breathing steady and clear. Ethan had spent an hour exploring the room, wide-eyed at the toys, books, and clothes that had arrived via courier earlier that morning.
The front door opened quietly, bringing in a gust of fresh pine air. Dominic stepped inside, looking worn and tired, but his posture relaxed the moment his eyes met Claire's.
"It's over," Dominic said quietly, walking into the room. He removed his shoulder holster and locked it inside a secure wall safe by the entrance before approaching her.
Claire looked up, her expression guarded. "What do you mean, it's over?"
Dominic sat on the heavy leather sofa opposite her. "Anthony Bellini and his senior lieutenants were arrested at 4:00 AM by federal agents at their private hangar. The Bellini crime family is finished. Their assets are frozen, and Vanessa is currently being held without bail on conspiracy and tax evasion charges."
Claire stared at him, stunned. "You... you gave them to the police? A mafia boss used the law?"
Dominic offered a tired, genuine smile—the first one she had seen on his face since he was twenty-four. "I promised you I would build a home filled with light, Claire. I can't do that if I'm fighting wars in the dark. I handed over the illegal operations my father ran. The Vale family is legitimate now. Logistics, shipping, real estate. No drugs, no extortion, no blood."
Claire lowered her gaze, staring at her hands. "Dominic... you destroyed your family's empire for us."
"I saved my family," Dominic corrected gently, leaning forward and reaching across the coffee table to take her small, bruised hand in his. "My father built an empire of ashes and fear. It destroyed my mother, it almost destroyed me, and it tried to destroy you and my sons. I didn't destroy anything worth saving."
Claire didn't pull her hand away this time. She felt the familiar warmth of his fingers, the strength and protection she had missed for five long, grueling years.
"They don't know who you are, Dominic," she whispered, tears glistening in her eyes. "Ethan is scared of you. He thinks you're going to take me away. He's been the man of the house while you were gone."
"Then I will earn his respect," Dominic said softly. "I don't expect them to call me 'Dad' today, or tomorrow, or even next year. I just want the chance to be there to protect them. To make sure they never have to pull a scrap cart through the rain ever again."

A small sob escaped Claire's lips. The weight of five years of solitary struggle, of cold nights, of hunger, of terrifying doctors' bills, suddenly washed over her all at once. She buried her face in her hands and began to cry tears of relief.
Dominic stood up, walked around the table, and pulled her up into his arms. He wrapped his massive frame around her, tucking her head under his chin just like he used to. Claire held onto his jacket tightly, letting the tears fall, finally letting go of the heavy armor she had worn for so long.
