Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Last Stand

Though the main Bellini syndicate had collapsed under federal indictments, the remnants of a dying criminal organization are often the most dangerous.
It was a quiet Thursday evening when Marco called Dominic's private secure phone. Dominic stepped into his home office, shutting the heavy oak door behind him.
"Speak, Marco."
"Boss, we have a problem," Marco said, his voice tense. "Vanessa Bellini posted bail two hours ago through an offshore straw company. Her father's former head enforcer, Hector, picked her up. They've gone off the grid."
Dominic's posture hardened instantly. "Have you tracked their location?"
"They hijacked a vehicle heading north toward Michigan," Marco reported. "Dominic, she knows about the lake house. She's desperate. She knows she's going to federal prison for life, and she has nothing left to lose."
"Deploy the perimeter team," Dominic ordered, his voice laced with thunder. "Lock down the main road. No one gets within five miles of this property."
"Underway, Boss. I'm ten minutes away with our team."
Dominic hung up the phone and pulled a key from his pocket, unlocking the hidden safe. He retrieved his sidearm, checking the magazine with practiced efficiency. He had hoped his past would never touch this sanctuary, but he was a man who would tear down heaven and earth to protect his home.
He walked out into the hallway, where Claire was coming up the stairs. She saw the gun in his hand, and her face went pale.
"Dominic? What's happening?"
"Vanessa skipped bail," Dominic said calmly, taking Claire's hands in his. "She's headed this way. I need you to take the boys into the safe room under the wine cellar. Now, Claire."
"Dominic, no! Come with us!" she pleaded, terror returning to her eyes.
"I have to secure the perimeter," Dominic said softly, kissing her forehead gently. "If I go into that safe room, she brings the fight to our doorstep. I finish this outside, once and for all. Trust me, Claire. I am not leaving you again."
Claire looked into his eyes, seeing no longer the cold mobster, but the man who loved her fiercely. She nodded, wiping a tear away. "Be careful. Please."
Five minutes later, Claire and the twins were safely locked inside the subterranean panic room—a steel-reinforced bunker equipped with independent air filtration and surveillance monitors.

Outside, the night was dark and quiet. Rain began to fall softly over the lake—a gentle spring rain, far different from the freezing downpour of Chicago's South Side.
Dominic stood on the covered porch, dark coat wrapped around him, watching the tree line. A black SUV with its headlights off crept slowly up the long gravel driveway, its tires crunching on the wet stones.
